Darrin Verhagen - Hydra (Dorobo, 2000)

1 Prelude [012 Particulate] 9:23
2 Carnage 5:59
3 Aftermath / H2SO4+F2 Remixed 7:25
4 Sirens 4:39
5 Seduction: Asphyxia 9:40

Well-known for his work as Shinjuku Thief/Filth, Darrin Verhagen was commissioned to create the soundtrack to a Chunky Move dance production, and has released the resulting material as Hydra, a limited edition EP on the Australian Dorobo label. A quiet snowfall of digital noise, Hydra is best experienced through headphones. Combining remixed elements from both his previous solo album, Soft Ash, and label-mate Alan Lamb's Night Passage, Verhagen's work on this EP is nearly subsonic: ultra-minimal blips and rumblings with delicate, scratchy ambient atmospherics, only occasionally bursting into barrages of full-on noise. A nice addition to the Dorobo catalogue...

Craig Colorusso's Sun Boxes (Boston, October 17th 2009)

Reçu un mail de Craig Colorusso demandant d'annoncer la présentation de son installation / Received a mail from Craig Colorusso asking to announce the presentation of his installation...

Sun Boxes are an environment to enter and exit. It’s comprised of twenty speakers operating independently each powered by solar panels. There is a different guitar sample in each box all playing together making the composition. The guitar samples are all of different lengths so the whole piece keeps evolving.

Participants are encouraged to walk amongst the speakers. It sounds different inside of the array. There is a different sense of space inside. Certain speakers will be closer and louder therefore the piece will sound different to different people in different positions throughout the array. Creating a unique experience for everyone.

There are no batteries involved. The Sun Boxes are reliant on the sun. When the sun sets the music stops. The piece changes as the length of the day changes. Making the participants aware of the cycle of the day.

The piece will be presented on The North Shore of Boston on Saturday October 17th 2009.

Klaus Wiese is a musical genius. He has proceeded beyond the purist's realm of acoustic singing bowls. Ceremony is a subtle blend of psychotropic bowls and psychoactive synths. Wiese explores the very limits of probability and goes to the nth degree of a new purity. The levels to which he can take the psyche build upon each other exponentially. It is like the proverbial upside-down pyramid. Thus, it is also a metaphor for life. As listeners travel this path of a conscious mind flux, they gather tools along the way. Some tools are intellectual, some are emotional, and some are devotional. All of the tools are, to some degree, spiritual. The six compositions are, in essence, merely movements in a long-form composition. The new purity is an essential device. It will appeal to fans of Alio Die, Mathias Grassow, Oöphoi, Will Green, and Stephen Philips. ~ Jim Brenholts, All Music Guide

Reçu un mail d'András (Indo) pour présenter son nouvel album / Received a mail from András (Indo) to present his new album....

Khsatra Vairya, the divine kingdom… What is this?
Maybe the old Aryan vibrations will help us to find the answer?

This trip starts on the ancient Persian streets. Sound of birds, walking people. You are just a guest in this kingdom, you are a pilgrim, but not a stranger - you've got a good guide who will lead you to all of the secret sacred places. A road to Zoroastrians temple. You've found the way to this divine kingdom.

Then we approach an old temple and watch the fire of Agiyari ("abode of fire", Place of Worship). Open the "Avesta" book and read the words of Zarathushtra.
Listen and hear the rhythm of sands and water. Sacred water in deep sands, a rose-water fountain symbolizing fragrance and happiness. Gardens with birds, running children…
Now we are going to the celebration of the fire. A dark night in the mountains and wood fire on the top. Silence and the rhythm of steel swords and gongs, which bring evil to death. A morning in the valley. You are waking up under the tree, near the lake. Again birds, again sacred water…
Navroz ("Arrival of Spring"), the main Parsis celebration. Crowds of people, glitters of fire reflected in steel of swords and worshipers' eyes. A lustre of fame and the magnificence of dresses. Fervent looks of concubine girls. Gardens, birds, mountains…Hot whirl in hot sands under the Holy Sun.

And now you are in the end of your trip… Was it the truth or just a dream? Have you guessed the riddle, will you read this dream? And, maybe, you have found yourself out? So, you have found your divine kingdom, your Khsatra Vairya.
The album in a whole makes a very positive impression, but there seem to be some problems with the quality of the sound. Therefore, this technical aspect is the only weak point of the work. The nearest parallel - classical "Muslimgauze".

and/OAR is very pleased to present a new work by Dutch sound artist Jos Smolders, who is also known as one of the founding members of THU20 (along with Roel Meelkop & Peter Duimelinks). This is Smolders' first release in a long time to not use sounds exclusive to electronic sources. Sound sources include field recordings from Sweden and Norway, combined with sounds from the street where Smolders resides. The result is an ionized mixture of organic progressions and soundscapes.

At times, this release displays energetic jolts of adrenaline tempered with intermittent moments of late night contemplative quiescence. Abstract and surreal Escher-like moments appear into distant view like a half remembered dream, and acoustic and electronic Moebius sound strips suddenly launch without warning.
and/OAR

The acoustic ecology of Jos Smolders manages to refresh the listener's brain through a sapient dosage of silence and events in a sort of sonic chemoterapy delivering us from residual particles of predictable manifestations. These sounds are best enjoyed in a silent environment, with just a modicum of external activity coming to enhance them, in order to be able to define their position not only in the surrounding space but also in that precise moment of your existence; street noises get filtered by effects, becoming an ever changing solution of fluorescent colours and concrete digital grains, the whole in a continuous struggle against predetermined shapes. Morphing voices of animals and humans are refracted in a thousand directions, yet they always remain within earshot, blending and fusing in shifting dynamic relationships with semi-organic external activities, thus reinforcing these soundscapes' evocative appeal. Everything sounds perfect in this veritable documentary; Smolders confirms his silent, steady growth as an
assembler of suggestions.

PIVIXKI/PATERAS/FOX/CHESSEX

“Instants Chavirés has supported many Australian artists throughout their existence. Without their support, I know my music at least could not be heard in Paris so frequently.
We are choosing to stage a concert without funds to draw awareness to the predicament that Instants finds itself in, and hopefully help solidify the
community behind their cause.

We hope you can join us on October the 8th.”

Anthony Pateras 2009

Robin FOX ordinateur

Robin FOX laser show

NO RETURN TO WORK FOR THE INSTANTS CHAVIRÉS

On Thursday July 2nd 2009 we were informed, by email and without prior consultation, that the balance of the operational subsidy allocated to our Association by the General Council of the Seine-Saint-Denis Department had been slashed by 25,000€. Add to this reduction a drop of 7000€ in municipal subsidy, and the Board of Directors of the Muzziques Association, with the agreement of the Instants Chavirés staff, decided to suspend the Autumn programme in its entirety, judging that the financial conditions necessary to continue had not been met. All concerts and exhibitions planned for the period between September and December were accordingly cancelled.

On July 22nd, we requested a meeting with the principal political figures involved, Claude Bartolone (Président of the General Council of the Seine-Saint-Denis Department) and Dominique Voynet (Mayor of Montreuil). On August 3rd, an assistant in charge of Cultural Affairs in Montreuil informed us of their intention to bring together all the financial backers of the Instants Chavirés with a view to "stabilising the future" of our organisation. On August 20th we met a member of the Mayor's cabinet who assured us of the local authority's willingness to organise a "round table" in an atmosphere favourable for dialogue.

Today we are still waiting for a date to be fixed for this meeting, and live in hope of a response from the General Council, who have remained totally silent to date – an attitude which, in addition to the lack of explanation behind their decision to axe our budget, can only be interpreted as irresponsible, arbitrary and unfair.

Though the difficulties we are faced with primarily concern regional autonomous bodies, the fact remains that the State has to assume its responsibilities, too; our Ministry of Culture, increasingly inadequate when it comes to supporting live events, is handing over the management of whole areas of the performing arts to the regional authorities, who, themselves caught up in the difficulties of decentralisation, are struggling to find their footing. In such a climate we see how difficult it is to make our voice heard.

But we shall not abandon our mission, nor turn our backs on our vocation: to affirm the necessary presence of a venue for contemporary creation in Seine-Saint-Denis, a venue whose extraordinary artistic fertility needs neither introduction nor justification. We demand an end to the politics of asphyxiation through repeated budgetary readjustments, this after nearly twenty years' requesting a regular and dependable financial framework that would allow us to guarantee and develop our activity.

Let us take advantage of this editorial then, this programme without a programme, to remind readers of the originality of the Instant Chavirés project and the place it occupies in the cultural landscape.

It was back in February 1991 that the Instants Chavirés in Montreuil began its 18-year-long journey, one that has seen a small performing space in the suburbs of Paris become rapidly and lastingly one of the essential venues for musical creation in France.

Despite limited resources, the Instants Chavirés developed an original concept and acquired, over the years, an international reputation for refusing to compartmentalize genres, welcoming numerous musical practices belonging to many diverse fields of experimentation and sound creation.

Tirelessly continuing to explore the concept of arts laboratory, the Instants Chavirés has, since 2004, embraced audiovisual art – through video projections and collective exhibitions in the former Bouchoule brewery – as another tool for exploring contemporary creation.

What is the Instants Chavirés?

An intermediary space born from an association which
- explores fields of artistic creation ignored by existing cultural policy and the entertainment industry;
- makes up for the deficiencies of and corrects the false assumptions of the above cultural policy;
- guarantees the emergence of artistic diversity and hence its revitalization;
- is an essential part of regional development which, in a correctly functioning economy, contributes to the richness of the artistic offer made to the public.

And above all, the Instants Chavirés is a human adventure, a space to work, experiment and create in, operating in close and friendly proximity to both the public and the artists themselves, as confirmed by the 4600 signatories (up to and including the 20th of September) to our petition.
Go to: http://instants.mollo.fr

We offer our wholehearted thanks to those who have already signed the petition and demonstrated their support by writing to elected officials.

I’m planning to organize a symposium about music and also a live performance at Kyoto, Japan on the 3rd of November.

I think that music and music engineering is currently in a real bad situation. Actually, I’m starting to have doubts that music, as a category, will be existing 20 years from now.

The critics, aestheticians and educators are not alarmed about this bad situation, and are not doing anything about this.

This current situation is making me really mad, and this is why I decided to hold this symposium.

I hope that people will discuss about this matter around the world even after this symposium ends, and find a solution for this problem.

I was wondering if you could tell the other people about this symposium & LIVE.

Please don't forget.
We Japanese always worry about future of music.

Inspired by Artists like Fear Falls Burning or Aidan Baker, this Record features atmospheric Guitar Drones. There are many Ways to discribe this Sort of Music. This is Music to releax to or even to medidate to. Its all about loosing the feeling for time and just lay back without any thoughts or something. Most of the Time the Music is pretty calm and smooth, but there are still some rougher moments. Remember, all of this music is made by the single effect of just one Guitar and a bunch of Effects. Strictly stripped down to the guitar and the noise that comes from it. Sometimes just one single chord builds an tremendous soundscape and single notes are flooting around. The trademark of Seconds in Formaldehyde music is the swelling of single notes. This record features 3 long tracks and everyone of them breaks the 10 minute mark.

David Toop / Max Eastley - New And Rediscovered Musical Instruments (Obscure, 1975)

A1 Max Eastley Hydrophone
A2 Max Eastley Metallophone
A3 Max Eastley The Centriphone
A4 Max Eastley Elastic Aerophone / Centriphone
B1 David Toop Do The Bathosphere
B2 David Toop The Divination Of The Bowhead Whale
B3 David Toop The Chairs Story

This might be as close as some music listeners ever get to Brian Eno, who both produces and gets involved in the actual music-making. Max Eastley and David Toop have both been immersed in creative music on the London scene for decades, expressing and furthermore acting out on their fascination with strange musical instruments from the past and future. This is the theme of this album, which although a bit gimmicky in places does provide a superbly recorded document of weird musical activities, in itself a good thing.

Eastley is some kind of genius when it comes to designing and building instruments. In his presentation of the hydrophone, the centriphone, and other delights, there is a sense if wonder, similar to the way a person might feel gazing upon the Parthenon for the very first time.

The album's title refers to just this reality, that the musical instruments of tomorrow, no matter how strange, will undoubtedly have some engineering link to the instruments of a very distant yesterday. It is more than just thought-provoking, as musical traditions have a way of actually materializing right in front of a performer's nose, like an unwanted poltergeist. It is Eastley who connects most solidly to this cosmic phenomenon in his set of brilliant performances.

The Toop sessions are an altogether different story, ranging from combinations of voice and ethnic instruments such as bamboo trumpets to a larger group recording that features Eno on prepared bass guitar playing alongside the avant-garde legend Hugh Davies and several interesting, obscure players from this period on the London scene. Toop plays some beautiful flute on the final track as well as some of his trademark water effects.
