Yannick Dauby - Nous, Les Défunts (Silence Radio, 2008)

Seventh month of the lunar calendar. After the opening of the Gates, we come back, hungry, in their city. Their chanting for us multply the spiritual foods. Their fortune-telling, their vehicles, their avenues. Vagrants in the afternoon storms. A procession guides us to the river. Their offerings, their cymbals. Meanwhile, cicadas just borned out of the earth, are chanting too, celebrating their death, the end of a cycle of life. Their metamorphosis, their choruses. We will reconcile, we will calm down our voices. Soon, a priest will block his ears, becoming deaf to our laments, he will trap us again in the Underground Realm.
[Field recordings from Taiwan, Summer 2008, notably in and around Longshan Temple in Taipei]

Commande de Silence-Radio à l'occasion du programme "Soundscape Forever".
Thanks to Yuki, Wild Bird Society Taipei, Wan-Shuen, Irvic and the people of Longshan Temple.

New releases on Sonoris

Yannick Dauby - Overflows (Sonoris, 2010)
Yannick Dauby, originated from Mediterranean Alps and currently based in Taiwan. Sound and location, sound and community, sound and ecology, are the main topics of his projects.
Overflows is a composition based on field recordings in natural, industrial and urban environments dealing with the overwhelming of listening.
Fans of Francisco Lopez, Jean-François Laporte or Eric La Casa will be pleased.

Seth Nehil - Furl (Sonoris, 2010)
Furl is the sequel to Seth Nehil’s critically acclaimed 2009 release Flock & Tumble, also on Sonoris. Continuing his exploration of physically charged, acousmatic sound, these compositions whip, crash, swoop, glide and burble. Clusters of bell-like tones pierce hazy, corroded atmospheres. Animalistic yelps, distant pings, percussive bursts and glassy swells all merge in this unique sound-world. These five pieces are both rigorously-assembled and gracefully sparse. Furl will be a welcome addition to the expanding catalogue in Nehil’s futuristic organic paradox.

Entrelacs - Underleaf (S'Agita Recordings, 2003)

1 Underleaf (48:47)

Entrelacs is the ongoing collaboration between Yannick Dauby and Micheal Northam, which they presented in various live concerts. I am not sure if this is a live or studio recording, but it uses the sounds of 'a walk along a fallen tree, corbet, oregon' and 'a
conversation with found objects, paris, france'. One can see the MNortham influences in this one - spacious processings of the outdoor sounds, but the small tinkling on the found objects work really nice along side this. The crackling seems to be appearing on all possible
levels and makes this is quite a complex work. Complex because of all the sounds happening, but it works out as a nice sort of ambient work. Maybe clocking in at almost 49 minutes is a bit on the long side, but nevertheless it is a nice one.

Yannick Dauby - Low Valley (Edition ..., 2004)

1 10:19

3 06:45
4 09:49
5 16:04

Metamkine

Yet another enigmatic disc on this prodigious sound art label from the USA. I am sure that I've heard Dauby's name before, but it escapes me at the moment where that could have been. Low Valley consists of five tracks, ranging from almost 7 to almost 17minutes in duration. Since there is no accompanying information, all explanations about this work stay in the realm of the fantastic. So let's stick to the audible: small sounds drift in from silence, fading in and out. It must be rain or other water sounds, filtered, manipulated, but recognisable. There are also cicada's and buzzing insects, birds singing, together with a person doing almost nothing, just being there, electrifying things. Furthermore there are electronic devices going haywire and sinewaves weaving themselves through the fabric of sound. Okay, this may sound complicated, but it is actually not so much so. I believe that Dauby is enigmatic with a good reason: ultimately hte sound sources are not overly important, the result is. And it must be said without hesitation that his compositions are strong and compulsive and deserve all the attention the listener can give them. This work is very well crafted and there is no doubt that Dauby has learned the tricks of the trade very well indeed. Recommended!
