Lux was recorded and created during the Autumn of 2010 with field recordings made in the inner city of Sydney, Australia. The recording locations were all made over a week at around dusk. This busy time when the air is filled with the sound of commuters returning home, transportation and the process of day turning to night formed the conceptual basis for these recordings. It's an interesting and dynamic environment, that slowly eases into the quiet and dark evening.

Darren Harper - Whispers (Earth Mantra, 2010)

1 Lattice
2 Carve
3 Brush
4 Autumn Droning
5 Static Lull
As winter descends at last upon the northern hemisphere, we at Earth Mantra don our soft flannel pajamas, curl up in a big comfortable blanket, fill our cup with piping hot tea, and ease ourselves back in our listening chair for another season of delightful ambience. Our favorite time of year is the cold months, when the winds outside blow fierce from the arctic north, but inside we relax snug and warm, the perfect setting for ambient music. And amid this setting, along comes the newest release from Darren Harper, called Whispers. Shorter than his usual fare, clocking in at only forty two minutes and change, this release nonetheless perfectly mirrors our love for the winter, a wondrous sound track for contemplation as the temperature falls.
Darren describes the release as a collection of "transition pieces", which still carry a bit of summery warmth but with anticipation of autumn's chill. He reports that as he composed the pieces in September of 2010, the scenery where he lives in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains changed quickly, from mild warmth to sudden snow, something Darren lovingly interpreted in this music as "whispers of a changing season". Indeed, the sense of enigma and change can be found everywhere in these pieces, echoing the passage of time and the winter transformation of the natural world.
Musically, these pieces could be described as lighter drones, with chimes, suspended synths, piano, and acoustic guitar, but really we would simply call them sublime. The sounds drift soothingly along, like leaves blowing quietly in the wind, with a constant sense of direction but imposing no requirement on the listener to ascribe any purpose at all to the music other than repose. Ambient music comes in a lot of forms, but one of our favorites is the pure undiluted kind, the ambience that just 'is', in a very present and zen-like sort of way. We consider Whispers a nearly perfect example of such a creation, the kind of music that becomes a constant companion for those quiet times as the skies grow dark and heavy with snow.
So with great pleasure we unveil the latest release by Darren Harper, an album of great beauty and profound depth. This is a release that we are very proud to bring to our listeners on Earth Mantra, and one that leaves us hoping for much more from Darren in the future.

Gimu - Beluga (Audio Gourmet, 2010)

1 Beluga 1
2 Beluga 2
For the final Audio Gourmet EP release of the year, we welcome a little-known sound designer from Brazil called Gimu. His earlier music career was based around a pop/electronic band called 'Terrorturbo', in which he was lead singer. As the members of the band went their separate ways over time, Gimu found himself left alone and unsure as to what would be his next move.
It was at this time, that he'd grown very tired of lugging equipment around, endless wires, instruments and even of the sorts of chord progressions and conventional aspects of playing that had been the mainstay of the band.
He had in fact grown tired of writing 'songs' altogether and began to seek new methods of artistic expression through sound.
He decided to strip away all of the structure and rhythm of these 'songs' for his solo work, concentrating on ambient soundscapes with a focus on repetition. He began a fascination with how repetition can take you to a new level of consciousness to the point where you suddenly feel as if you are listening to things that may not even be present in the recording.
For his debut EP here on Audio Gourmet, Gimu has assembled two beautiful tracks that are a perfect representation of the sort of soundscapes he has been inspired to produce in his quest as a solo sound artist.
Through the two tracks on 'Beluga', Gimu tributes this work to close friend Patricia; a constant voice of encouragement and support to his music. This soundtrack is thematically based around the dead dreams of a biologist, the ocean and hope...
We hope you enjoy this body of work and keep an eye out for future output from this emerging talent!

Vladislav Buben, well known under the name Buben, is a sound artist and an imminent pioneer of the underground scene in Bielorussia.
The connexion between Buben and Anton Mobin was established by Rinus van Alebeek, a few months ago, when Rinus asks Anton a technical help to digitalize sounds from a tape which be used by Buben to compose the great album released on Clinical Archives : Moral Tranformations (ca377) > http://www.archive.org/details/ca377_bra
After this technical support, Buben naturally asks Anton if he have some sounds to send him to start a new collaboration.
Of course, Anton Mobin had sounds and he is always interested in new connexion and web collaboration. Sharing sounds with Buben was very spontaneous; Anton picked up in his sound bank many different textures, like extracts from Live improvisation, radio fragments, Field recordings and every day life moments.
Then, Vladislav Buben was alone to compose, assembly, edit and mix all the materials. The real and unique composer still being Buben in this release !
Listeners must know that nothing in Creation is a easy thing and to complicate the story, the first version of this collaboration was killed by Buben’s laptop, which its hard disk burned !!
The revenge was terrible ! And it’s not one album, but TWO that Buben realized in a total different aesthetic !!
One influenced “darkbeat” and the second more “experimental”…
Thanks to Just Not Normal and Off/Bruma, the two releases are OUT simultaneously on December 7th, 2010 !

Daniel Barbiero – Monuments Seen Through Peripheral Vision (Just Not Normal, 2010)

01 Monuments seen through peripheral vision
02 Listen to the room
03 Violet grey black on blue
A native of New Haven, CT, Daniel Barbiero has been involved in creative improvised music in the Baltimore-Washington area for several years as a performer, composer, and sometime bandleader. He has worked in a variety of contexts, including modal and post-bop jazz, free improvisation, and world fusion drawing on the Indian classical and Middle Eastern musical traditions.
Fans of NTNS radio know that I have a strong taste for free improv jazz, where the likes of D’Incise and many others have passed the airwaves. It is with great honor that I may introduce this fine gentleman that provides the JNN airwaves with a very strong free jazz sound that is interspersed with field recordings and all kinds of other background noises that have one big commonfactor; the sensuous sounds of the standup bass. It is just delicious!

Altocumulus - Household Apocalypse (Just Not Normal, 2010)

01 Household apocalypse
02 Night fears
03 Stairwell of souls
04 Bag it
05 Spring song
06 Highschool game (She’s dating Max)
07 August anxiety
08 Four days of rain
What if an artist that previously released one of the more fabulous experimental albums done on the Buchla 100 system from the Brandeis University would take a trip in a time capsule and use all anewed tools of the day and chooses to build a brand new album made from sounds of ordinary household equipment? Well; remember the ‘My name is Marieta Cashman’ album here on JNN? Altocumulus takes control again 40 years later!
HOUSEHOLD APOCALYPSE is made from the sounds that come through my window and up through the stairwell. It is also made from sounds of household objects used as percussion or drones: ceiling fans, struck pot lids and stroked springs,
crunched paper bag, rain in the gutter, shaken metal cans, clinking glass jars…whatever is at hand in my dwelling. All these were recorded on a Zoom H2 digital microphone and then imported and processed in Macintosh’s “GarageBand” digital audio workstation/synthesizer. I then added synthesized sounds from GarageBand to accompany the household sounds, playing on a MIDI keyboard.
1. HOUSEHOLD APOCALYPSE: Pot lids, metal boxes, glass jars, helicopter flying overhead, GarageBand drones and sound processing.
2. NIGHT FEARS: Wall clock, GarageBand synthesizer
3. STAIRWELL OF SOULS: Stairwell ambience and neighbors. Banging on iron railings with a rubber shoe. Bouncing plastic toy ball on wooden surface. Shaking empty paint cans. GarageBand synthesizer.
4. BAG IT: Crumpled paper bag, GB synthesizer. Piece made for a challenge by Stillstream’s Mike Metlay, to produce a piece that was between 2:00 minutes and 2:20.
5. SPRING SONG: Scraping and striking a spring in a bendable light fixture; miniature wind chimes, tree frog, GB synthesizer
6. HIGH SCHOOL GAME (She’s dating Max): Distant football game ambience and voices, autumn crickets, two gossipy boys on bicycles, GB synthesizer
7. AUGUST ANXIETY: Bathroom fan drone, chair scraping floor, August night insect ambience with thunder, GB synthesizer with MIDI electric piano
8. FOUR DAYS OF RAIN: Rainwater in a gutter, plastic water bottles, soda cans, coffee scoop, more rainwater in the gutter, GB synthesizer

Shane Morris - Train.To.Knowhere (Just Not Normal, 2010)

01 Train.to.Knowhere
02 Train departs [field recording]
One of the thriving forces behind the electro-music scenery and it’s quarterly marathons is quickly becoming the illusive and flamboyant releaser of sounds to hold dear. With albums on Earth Mantra and EdP (forgive me if I’m wrong on this one) the reputation of this usually live performing longtracker has now reached the outer realms of Just not Normal territory.
Why you may ask is such the case; Well Shane besides his love for the synthetic also has a growing love for the useage of field recordings. There was the ‘No Labels No Music’ compilation album recently on EdP that was initiated by Shane on the electro-music.com forum for one. But Shane will not stop there, nor with this release right here.
Train.to.Knowhere starts of with one of Shane’s own field recordings and from that builds into an hour long epilogue. One that captures your attention; so much so that if you aren’t paying enough attention, you might just miss the train…

Krabatof - Sea Of Trees (Just Not Normal, 2010)

01 Intro
02 Jyukai
03 Sea of trees
04 Aokigahara
05 Ki no umi
How these mystical artists find their way into the realms of JNN is beyond me sometimes, but behold; this ‘Sea of trees’ will astound you. But before we talk of this album here, let’s share a previous review of ‘Insect’s Brain’ shared on Touching Extremes;
“a little more than 31 minutes of very interesting “bruit art” by Geneva-based Ludovic Guerry, who manipulates “noises, field recordings and many weird sounds” in seven personal definitions of a peculiar world of embryonic utterances and disembodied dreams about the inhospitality of life.”
While it baffles me to know who might be behind Krabatof, since I’ve read a few different names now I find myself lost in the sounds of the album you see in front of you now. The mysticism to me only ups the anté and I find myself caring less for the creator, but dwell only more the the creation. You should try it yourself too! If you too get lost, try the breadcrumbs option, but beware of the geese.

3 Untitled pt.I 11:07
4 Untitled pt.2 04:11
5 Untitled pt.3 10:02

7 The Midlands 04:11
Tokyo Sleep Police is a one-man-band project currently residing in London. Having formed itself out of the grim, post-industrial midlands and ashes of avant-doom collective Goddam Ox, 'Pilgrimages' recounts the journey out these humble beginnings, across moors and tors in Cornwall, remembering visits to old and new friends across Europe, and ending in the East End of our intimidating capital, London. The songs on this album are deeply personal, and themselves travel across a
spectrum of sound, from the pure electronic of 'Transition' and 'Rare Earth', to the electro-acoustic soundscapes of the Untitled tryptich and ending finally in the polyrhythmic pure acoustic compositions of 'London' and 'The Midlands'. I am very rpoud of this record and hope that you enjoy listening to it (preferably on headphones!).

Shinobu Nemoto is a sound-artist from Kanagawa, Japan. You might know “Summons of Shining Ruins”, his solo-guitar project or “Dark Side of The Audio System “, a tape-loop-experiment. Under his real name Shinobu Nemoto mainly releases guitar-improvisations and field-recordings. He also runs the label “MOUFU-ROKUON“ and did collaborations with Brain Grainger, Jason Adams and Danielle Demos.
“Melting Loop Trip“ is a collection of sixteen loops, each loop between six and thirteen minutes long. Each loop is a beautiful analog picture. Very athmospheric, very warm and very, very meditative. You can fall back into a cloudy bed of hushed noises, shimmering melodies and wonderful echo-structures.
You can go ahead, pick your favorite loop and listen to it on repeat. Or you can listen to the complete release from track to track. In addition to Shinobu’s musical output illustrator Kati Meden created an artwork-concept for the complete release as well as for every single loop based on her colour-alphabet.

Christopher McFall – A Long Time Running for The Suicide Strays (Resting Bell, 2010)

1 Crooked Site Winding
2 Exquisite Sender
3 Third Guest
4 Tightrope’s Ailing
Christopher McFall is a well-known name in the experimental music scene, not only because of his CD-releases for Entr’acte, Mystery Sea, Sourdine, 1000füssler, Gears Of Sand, Moving Furniture Records and Unfathomless, but he’s also composed a multitude of netaudio-releases on Test Tube, Earlabs, Clinical Archives, Alg-a, CONV and Impulsive Habitat. What an impressive list of work.
His new release on Resting Bell is a lovely EP called “A Long Time Running for The Suicide Strays“. It consists of 4 tracks with a complete duration of 25 minutes. The EP starts with very rhythmic fragments, bringing to mind notions of old machines covered with dust and then it evolves into a more droning environment. The sound is really dark and harsh. The rhythmic elements seem to be hammering from a distant time and the melodies are haunting through old and frazzled drapery. If I had to describe a room for this music it would be an old abandoned factory-building or vaudeville-theatre. Christopher has assembled all of these elements together very carefully and in a sublime manner. For me it is hard to say whether the source sound materials are derived from field recordings, piano fragments or some saxophone-sounds. As a whole, the EP has a very dense and atmospheric composition.
Enjoy the days of fall with this wonderful release.

Solquest - Full Ashtray (Rope Swing Cities, 2010)

1 Full Ashtray Part 1
2 Full Ashtray Part 2
The 41st release on Rope Swing Cities comes to us from the long suffering Italian artist, Solquest. I say long suffering because this release came into our hands before RSC’s hiatus, and waited, and waited, and remastered, and waited until things finally started up again, and now, Full Ashtray is getting to see the light of day… or the dark of night, which is more appropriate for this release.
Full Ashtray is a meditation. For twenty minutes Solquest is your guide for this exploration of inner thought. droning and rhythmic, but overall, disquieting, Full Ashtray describes perfectly the urban, industrial backdrop which provides inspiration for Solquest’s work.
The two parts of Full Ashtray work best when paired together as the ambience and intensity waxes and wanes through its entirety. By the end, the morning has come, but not much has been solved, relief comes, not because of solutions, but because another night has been survived, and the mistakes of the previous day can be made again anew. Dark and brooding, I know, but sometimes a piece of music is crafted not to bring an easy experience, somtimes what we all truly need is a good psychological scrubbing, and for that Full Ashtray delivers.
Enjoy!
