VACVVM - Peaceful Atom (Test Tube, 2011)

01 Peaceful Atom 6'27''
02 Pylons 5'49''
03 SCRAM 0'49''
04 Lava Flow 1'33''
05 Oka 4'23''
06 Yenisei 6'04''
07 Leaving Pripyat
08 Work Wood Forest 6'43''
09 Radiologos 4'20''
10 Ignalina's Sunset 3'51''

«When it was born in the mind of italian musician Guglielmo Cherchi, 'Peaceful Atom' was intended to be a concept work about the Chernobyl disaster, and as a result of this some tracks are ideally connected to that topic: the title track (referring to the name of the first RBMK - Reactor Bolshoy Moshchnosty Kanalny - reactor), SCRAM (the emergency shutdown of a nuclear reactor), Lava Flow (the melted material erupted from the reactor after the explosion), Leaving Pripyat (the evacuation of the nearest city to the powerplant), Worm Wood Forest (the dead trees killed by the radiations) and Ignalina's Sunset (Ignalina was the last nuclear powerplant to use a RBMK reactor, the same model involved in the Chernobyl disaster, which was only shut down in 2009).
The other songs don't belong to this concept but are related to the environment pollution problem in Russia: Oka and Yenisei are the two most polluted rivers in the planet; Pylons refers to the Shukhov towers (featured on the cover artwork), which were electricity pylons on the banks of the Oka river. The remaining track, Radiologos, is a stand-alone song, but features an original jingle aired in Soviet Russia's radio stations.

'Peaceful Atom' was entirely built from scratch using laptop-based synthesizers and electric guitar, with the exception of a few samples. On 'Worm Wood Forest': Arboretum Bad Grund by Inchadney at The Free Sound Project, on 'Radiologos': Soviet jingle and radio recordings taken with an old military tubes HF radio and on 'Leaving Pripyat': electrostatic hiss taken from an old Kenwood amplifier dating from the eighties at high volume.

Enjoy this release.»

1 Nyctalopia 1
2 Nyctalopia 2
3 Nyctalopia 3
4 Nyctalopia 4
5 Nyctalopia 5
6 Nyctalopia 6

This is the first release on Electronic Musik from Philippe Petit

PHILIPPE PETIT is interested in soundtracks; even if he creates original music he'd rather be introduced as a "musical travel agent" than a composer.

PETIT uses a Cymbalum, an Electric Psalterion, computer and synths to build up electronic layers, process acoustic and field recordings. To second the machines he likes to move various glasses, or percussive objects, and take advantage of vinyl material to fondle released sounds.

A journalist for various magazines and radio as well as a musical activist, PETIT has celebrated his 25th year of sharing his musical passions as the man behind the cult labels Pandemonium Rdz. and BiP_HOp.

PETIT has assembled what people call a dream-team of collaborators, working with: Lydia Lunch, Foetus, Kumo, Scott McCloud (Girls Against Boys), Cosey Fanni Tutti, My Brightest Diamond, Sybarite, Pantaleimon, Graham Lewis (Wire), Barry Adamson, Scanner, Mira Calix, Kammerflimmer Kollektief, Guapo, Leafcutter John, Simon Fisher Turner, Justin Broadrick and many more...
Aside his solo works, PETIT is active in Strings Of Consciousness, does a duo with Lydia Lunch, and his collab with James Johnston (Gallon Drunk/Bad Seeds/Faust) just appeared on Dirter Promotions.

His first solo album 'Henry: The Iron Man' was released thru Beta Lactam Ring Records, second one 'Silk-screened' is published on Trace Recordings and upcoming is 'A Scent Of Garmambrosia' CD on Aagoo + a picture-disc single with Cosey Fanni Tutti on Dirter Promotions. In the works are collabs with Murcof, Simon Fisher Turner, ASVA, Vultures and "Cordophony" gathering music whose sound comes from the vibrations of one or several strings.

Aairria - Katharsis (Earth Mantra, 2011)

01 - Imipramine 10:20
02 - Amoxapine 9:36
03 - A Waterclock, A Ball-Jointed Doll, A Broken Piano 47:54

After a long time away, ambient prodigy Marcin Drabot returns to Earth Mantra with another collection of fathomless textural music, this time a trio of captivating pieces from his Aairria project called Katharsis.

We will confess from the outset that our admiration for Drabot's music extends very far and very deep. We consider him nothing less than one of the premier ambient artists active today, having created several pieces that we would call classics, essential listening for anyone who claims to love this genre. Needless to say, when Marcin gave us the opportunity to release another album by him, we literally jumped at the chance.

And what a release we have in store for our listeners. Perhaps unlike the artist's excellent 2007 Earth Mantra release Nasti, the music of Katharsis covers a surprisingly broad swath of the ambient landscape, at times dark and mildly foreboding, other times mellow and contemplative, and still other times textural and abstract. Our amazement at Marcin's mastery of so many ambient forms never ceases, and we think Katharsis makes a particularly apt introduction to his music for those who are unfamiliar, as well as a singularly welcome addition to his catalogue for those who have long enjoyed his work. Remarkably well done.

In fact, though we may never cherish anything Marcin produces as much as his magnum opus Inside My Room, Watching The Rain, a release that we consider to be the penultimate ambient composition ever made by anyone anywhere. we find the music of Katharsis to stand up very strongly against even this towering standard. Such a lovely collection of colors, mingled together so tastefully, that we have to say this is one of the best releases Marcin has ever produced. The compositions are especially well crafted, and complement each other aesthetically on multiple levels. This is the kind of music that suspends time, the sort of experience that speaks to a deeper consciousness well below the surface, something that you will want to hear again and again.

So it is with great pleasure that we announce the second release by Aairria on Earth Mantra, the brilliant and evocative Katharsis. It has been much too long since the last time Marcin Drabot has shared his music with our audience, and we hope that it will not be nearly so long until we again have the privilege. Highly, highly recommended.

[mikra] – Attalla2 (Webbed Hand Records, 2011)

01 Attalla2 [01:59:17]

“Now it is a little about itself and about the given two-hour material. Was born and live in the city of Minsk which is capital of last dictatorial state of Europe (at present) @ Belarus. To me 34 years. It is dissolved. There is a daughter who is called by Nastya, and its voice is on ATTALLA2. There is a girlfriend with whom I want to connect all remained life. Her name is Nadya – and is present its image on a cover to music. ATTALLA2 – very personal intimate (for me) work. In it I tell about myself, by means of the primitive computer and analog old Soviet synthesizers. I haven’t dared to divide all sounding into separate parts as it is often accepted because then integrity of my history and the concept put in music would be broken. I can only advise – to perceive the given work as film viewing … a film about me, my life and my love.. Thanks for attention)))” —

Oren Ambarchi, Günter Müller & Voice Crack - Oystered (Audiosphere, 2003)

1 Walking Oysters 10:51
2 Briefing Oysters 13:11
3 Grounding Oysters 7:57
4 Oystered 9:47

Debates continue to rage about what to call the ever more important genre of AMM-influenced electronics. Still freely improvised, the music has variously been called lowercase improv, egoless improv, electro-acoustic improv, post-AMM improv, glitch-prov, and more. I don’t know what in the world to call it, but if anyone is even remotely familiar with the genre then the names of the musicians on Oystered will be instantly recognizable. Australian guitar experimentalist Oren Ambarchi – one of the more interesting young players in this scene – met up with Swiss masters Voice Crack (Andy Guhl and Norbert Moslang on "cracked everyday electronics"), who have recently disbanded, and Günter Müller, who plays electronics and selected percussion. Apparently gorged on oysters and wine, they headed into the disturbingly named Big Jesus Burger studio in Sydney. It’s a very rich meeting, comprised of four tracks over 41 minutes, and doesn’t sound much like what one might expect from a Müller/Voice Crack summit.

"Walking Oysters" opens with processed drum throbbing away, a gentle catalyst for some jarring, almost serrated electronic sounds. Perhaps no surprise here, since Voice Crack have always struck me as among the more rhythmically oriented electronics improvisers. The Müller’s and Ambarchi’s strategies work well in concert with this approach – somewhere in this piece it sounds like a helicopter flying above a crowd involved in ritual incantations (with somebody playing a contrabass clarinet). As always with this music, one has very little idea about the source of the sound; that’s part of the intrigue, as is trying to describe it. On "Briefing Oysters," muffles and subdued whines try to keep down flinty scraping noises, but fail beautifully. The slowly changing frequencies – tones being altered in pitch – create some delicious tension, as the crackles and rustles suggest tiny animals clawing their way out of your speakers. "Grounding Oysters" is the most nervous and claustrophobic track, with its insistent pulse and sounds of a robot’s indigestion. On the closing title track, Ambarchi’s processed and treated guitars are very eerie. Though this is a one-off meeting, ultimately the group sounds very coherent, a single-celled sonic organism that might well have emerged from the same muck as the group’s beloved oysters. In general this is subdued music which might appeal to fans of Ambarchi’s work with Keith Rowe, some of Müller’s duets (with, say, Taku Sugimoto or Lê Quan Ninh), or sound artist Ralf Wehowsky.

Hat Melter - Unknown Album (Crouton, 2003)

1 Untitled 15:45
2 Untitled 17:10

Crouton weeps with joy over this new release featuring Steve Hess, percussion; Jeff Klatt, cello; Jon Mueller, percussion; and Matt Turner, cello. Together they form ‘Hat Melter’, and quite literally too, as their names suggest. Although beyond the coincidence of the selective letters of their names, this group also combines elements of each others’ instruments to create a record of rich, vibrant sound - loaded with the texture of strings, and the melody of percussion. Strange, yes, and so is the record. The initial recordings were captured in a live setting. The cello work of Matt Turner, who is regarded as one of the world’s leading improvising cellists (as featured on Meniscus, Stellar, O.O. Discs, Asian Improv, Rastascan, Geode, and Cadence), is top notch, and is complemented wholeheartedly by vibrant cellist and recent composition graduate Jeff Klatt. Steve Hess and Jon Mueller, known Chicago and Milwaukee area percussionists, play harmonies with their cymbals, and grind Styrofoam through box fans. The results of this live session were then taken back to C. Rosenau’s studio, segmented, and analog constructed into new developments - segments as heard from the ‘ear’ of one room mic, strings picked up by snare drum mics - a reassignment of the flow of vibrations, and the feeling of ‘moments’ being pulled out of a magic hat. The end result is a record of switched sound characteristics, mixed emotions, and combined names that reveals a mysterious, often dark labyrinth of unknown sound. Two side long tracks, each with no name - unknown first by the players, and finally the listener...
Crouton

A platter of black vinyl packaged in an unmarked black cardboard jacket, with only a strip of paper disclosing some information: this is Hat Melter's Unknown Album. The group consists of four American improvisers: two cellists (Matt Turner and Jeff Klatt) and two percussionists (Jon Mueller and Steve Hess). At the heart of this album is a free improvisation, but what we hear through these two side-long pieces is a different story -- to be more precise, a different perspective. The pieces have been reshaped and re-sourced by Chris Rosenau (Telecognac, Collections of Colonies of Bees). Instruments are heard from other musicians' microphones, events have been resequenced, the whole listening experience is reconstructed following another person's point of view. It results in a fascinating but highly dizzying album. For example, at one point on side two, the quartet is split into two cello/drums duets, each isolated in its stereo channel and "heard" from a distance. A cello moves front stage center and a few seconds later everyone gets tucked away in the right channel. The technique recalls René Lussier's CD Deboutonné, where the sound engineer had the possibility to mix the input of a dozen microphones placed in and outside the recording booth, but in that case the performance was left unaltered, only the sonic perspective changed. Here, we don't know where performance ends and studio construction begins. It makes for very dynamic music, despite the highly abstract nature of the original improvisation -- which should be included as a bonus track if this album ever gets released on CD.

Arturas Bumšteinas - Eterniday News (Vol. 1) (Audiotalaia, 2011)

01 Waking Song (Instrumental Version)
02 Refusenik
03 Stolby
04 Purim (featuring Pure)

Arturas Bumšteinas is a well regarded musician and visual artist from Vilnius, Lithuania. He is involved in many projects in the fields of contemporary and experimental music. His compositions have been published by many labels as physical and online releases. Bumšteinas also has a prolific career as visual artist, working on techniques ranging from video to drawings, sound installations or photography.

Eterniday News (Vol. 1) is a compilation of four compositions centered on many aspects of soundscape composition, sampling and recombination. Composer has prepared quite a long oeuvre that portraits different moments during his touring around Europe. In general the whole release is a tour around different aspects of Bumšteinas interest in contemporary composition. A tour that generates an imaginary landscape of acoustic moments that has an inherent feel of sound logbook or the kind of recording you get back home after traveling.

Notes from the author:

„Waking Song (instrumental version)” is an instrumental version of original song for soprano voice and electroacoutsic ensemble from the song cycle called „Five Songs“. This cycle won 1st Prize in the Competition of Best Lithuanian Music Compositions of the Year 2009 (electroacoustic category). Instrumentals by Liudas Mockūnas (sax), Šarūnas Jankauskas (clarinet), Tadas Žukauskas (violin).
