DTH – Young Heart Sounds (Chinquapin Records, 2011)

Each track, title, and sample in this album is very personal to me. Many of the clips are of my friends, family, or places/events I’ve been. I conducted these pieces primarily as a way to sort of immortalize a certain time of my life – all the people, places, and feelings that came with it.

Jack Hertz - Black Sunday (Just Not Normal, 2011)

1 Black Sunday

As oft throughout the year electro-music.com feasts on special occassions with a team of performers galore. And so they did on Halloween, be it a day later though, sunday october 31st. One of the sets of that evening was from Jack Hertz.
And I’ve been listening to it now for the last hour. There is but one thing missing in all this; images.
Then again, all you need to do is put this on your player and for a full hour you’ll find yourself in a haunted story. One that happened on a black sunday! Jack features his quisp quake and tells a tale of horror.

Mikra – Es Ist Über Ein Wenig Rainer Maria Rilke (Just Not Normal, 2011)

1 Es Ist Über Ein Wenig Rainer Maria Rilke

It was some time ago that I received an email from Pavel from Minsk (Belarus). He came to JNN through word of Zhang JW of the great Bypass netlabel. As Pavel explains his music displays the modern technogenic world and intertwines also the Internet and cinema. This piece you’re about to hear is indeed a world of technogenics that intertwines the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke. JNN has previously released albums that work from the poetry of some famed poets and writers, but this release takes it all a step further.

One could call this collaging sounds and spoken words, but together they make for an intriguing listen.

Pavel may also be known under his ABC monniker that has a fantastic release out on the intox noize netlabel. As he stated he used to work with old Soviet analog synths in the past but has now moved on working more with computers. Either sound grand to my ears, so why not join in hearing something quite fascinating.

Joe Frawley - Speak Of This To No One (Clinical Archives, 2010)

1 The kiss
2 In paradisium (Black lipstick)
3 Avenue of the Secret Fur
4 Yes, please, yes
5 Mirrors
6 Descension Day
7 Apparition
8 Faded flowers
9 Touch

I wrote the music, or improvised the music, and played the piano. I also chose the found sounds and did the electronic processing and arrangements. Rachel breathed, spoke and sang. Greg provided certain sounds in the bass register. Some voices are those of narrator "Secrets", who reads for Librivox.org. "Descension Day" features double bass bowed harmonics played by Houston Guy, courtesy of user "Stomachache" on Freesound.org. "Yes, please yes" is based around dialogue samples borrowed from the BBC Radio 4 Woman's Hour Drama "Sacred Hearts". Special thanks to J.C. for sharing his personal collection with me. Cover illustration is a detail from "Ava in the Snow", by Natasha Newton [ http://theblackbirdsings.typepad.com ], used by permission. Speak of this to no one.

Conductive Alliance - Water Glyphs (self release, 2010)

Water Glyphs" is the sophomore EP from Chicago's Conductive Alliance. The albums intricate sound collages and experimental pop arrangements expand on the minimalist improvised approach heard within the band's earlier incarnation. Their broadened musical palette incorporates spiraling tape loops, fizzing electronics, ethnic percussion, cello and musical saw.

Tracking was split between Steve Albini's Electrical Audio Studios and Shape Shoppe. The EP was engineered and mixed by Griffin Rodriguez, who has worked previously with Icy Demons, Beirut, Man Man, and Akron/ Family. Recording to tape, the band captured the cavernous drum sound and instrumental warmth of Electrical Audio and Shape Shoppe.

Conductive Alliance will be touring extensively this summer and fall to promote the new release.

Dth - Songs To Sleep Next To (self release, 2010)

01 Pruny Hands Felt Health 06:03
02 You Are In The Grass 04:06
03 Honesty Is God (with Chris Rehm) 03:56
04 Sleeping's Just Like Lust 01:35
05 Your Eyes Are Like Wells 03:06
06 Your Heart's Like A Baby's Face 05:16
07 Staring Games 05:05

Devin Hildebrand, who plays under the moniker Dth, just released a new album.

Just some haiku, to accompany tracks :

Pruny hands felt health.
And now I've got the river
All over myself.

It's not I miss you,
It's scared love that you're still here.
You are in the grass.

I wish we'd just lay
Out our insides as we meet.
Honesty is God.

Sleeping's just like lust
When you forget touch and just
Keep thinking enough.

Your eyes are like wells
Swaying my hanging torso
As they shrink and swell.

I'm so impatient.
Your heart's like a baby's face
I can't understand.

Also, please note that most of these tracks contain key parts represented by extremely low and/or extremely high frequencies. Thus, this album may not be fully heard on some speakers or if one has some hearing loss.

Tracks #1 and #2 for RTG.

Track #3 is a collaboration with Chris Rehm (visit).

Dth - I Hope I Can Feel Something Like That One Day (self release, 2010)

Reçu un mail de Devin qui vient d'auto produire son premier album sous le pseudonyme de Dth / Received a mail from Devin, who just self release his first album as Dth...

This album is held together mainly by the little noises of everything: found sounds, field recordings, samples of everyday speech and old VHS's. On top of this are some guitar lines and progressions, and some additional percussion and ambient vocals. The overall mood it strives for is empathetic and nostalgic, though frantic at some times.
Dth

Dth is a kid doing college down in New Orleans who asked a whole bunch of people how they were feeling and then cut it up into samples of their recorded voices, dividing it up into a 16-point scale (weird, right?) based on how they were feeling.

The results amount to a glitchy mashup of sampled talking, with some smooth guitar and synth instrumentals and a whole army of digital clicks and corresponding clacks. And some jazz drum, at one point. Many of these tracks sound a lot like the premeditated "aleatoric" music of The Books, but with a perfomative fourth wall cracked away at between the recorder and the field-recorded. Here's how he explains the project:

I set up two mics in an alcove outside my school's dorms (then had to move to inside the commons building because of rain) and stopped numerous people, hit record, and asked them, "How are you feeling today, on a scale 1-10?" After receiving a good amount of responses, some short and some long and elaborate, I quickly cropped out some abrasive noises and pops in the recordings around the responses they gave me (resulting in some gaps between answers). Then I had a series of conversational clips, each containing at least 1 number.

I devised a way to scale these numbers to notes - a simple version of a major scale, but intervals of every other note (for instance 7 = C, 8 = E, not D.) This way, I could also account for the times I got responses of a half number, like 8.5. I played the corresponding notes whenever a number was spoken in my clips, and sustained it somewhat until the next number was spoken. When the same number was spoken consecutively (as in two people in a row said 7), I would play the octave of that note.

People's moods making music together.
