Marcus Obst - Trafic Tonalité (Field Muzick, 2006)

1 Trafic Tonalité 21:46

“Trafic Tonalite” was inspired by a trip to the IRCAM in Paris, which saw Marcus’ equipment melt away and him travelling home without the wished-for results. On this twenty-minute long composition, he sets out to explore, when traffic noise ends being a pain in the ear and starts being agreeable (or the other way round). Well, as long as the street noises are integrated into a hazily floating surrounding like this one, they can stay. “Trafic Tonalite” drifts off on the wings of a happily babbling sequencer line and warm harmonies, with some hardly traceable effects and a steady rhythm providing diversion. Nothing really happens, but suddenly this track reaches a point of total immersion, when you don’t want to let go and keep on driving along for ever. Like a sky-coloured Sunday-morning version of Kraftwerk’s "Autobahn". Absolutely magnificent – and unfortunately limited to 50 copies only.

Dronæment - Yr (Blade Records / Afe Records / Nauze Muzick, 2002)

1 Yr Pt. I (11:04)
2 Yr Pt. II (9:10)
3 Sensum (2:54)
4 Purify (22:14)
5 Ea Pulse (4:58)
6 Ea Nostalgia (4:55)

Immediately acclaimed as one of Afe's best releases, and one of last year's most remarkable drone works, Dronæment's "Yr" is a joy to the ear and to the eye.

Coming folded in a chinese paper sheet with handmade drawing, plus a "regular" cardboard cover with suggestive artwork, and including a multimedia part with info, pictures and a video, it really pushes the CD-R format to a professional level far more exciting than most "regular" releases.

And the sonic part is just excellent. Droning ambient relying on delayed string instruments, synths and organs, plus field recordings (a beach, the rain...) and a cello (played by Markus Altmann) in "Ea nostalgia".

Nothing that hasn't been played a hundred times over the years, but Markus Obst has managed to create a miracle of magic, nostalgia and restlessness which I could only compare to Eno's "On land" masterpiece.

Dreamy but also turbulent and ever-shifting, these six tracks really deserve continued, and deep, listenings. Dronaement has also realesed an LP and a 7" record on Drone Records, and a new CD-R will be released soon by Afe - rejoice.

Dronæment - Ezoterick Soundzcapes (Mystery Sea, 2003)

1 Moon Drone (9:15)
2 Psw1 (7:39)
3 Psw2 (19:46)

Ce disque serait né d'une passion croisée pour le son de drones d'un barrage hydroélectrique et la musique indienne....

German Marcus Obst has been operating for many years in the underground "experimental" scene under various names of which the most known remains his dronæment incarnation...
some of his releases included works for AFE (Andrea Marutti's label), DACHSTUHL (Tarkatak/Lutz Pruditsch's label) & french label LE CRI DE LA HARPE (collaboration with RABBITS'SORROW)...
Marcus is quite a versatile artist who loves to throw a bridge between his visuals & sounds...
As for dronæment's "ethics", they are maybe enclosed into its own name... "drone as ornament", as a vital & mesmerizing motif...

Proceeding from a singular fascination for the interaction between elemental forces, natural phenomena, and all sorts of currents, dronæment's music is also an intuitive transcription of the experience of being rooted in the memory of a specific location...

On "ezoterick soundzcapes", a few drops seem suspended, half-frozen in the open air, forming a trembling pool of evanescent vibrations, a corona of waving particles, a striping motion leading to a calm shelter...
Like waking up on a submerged morning,
a repeated echo pounds out a lunar chant, digging deeper, culminating with each passage along its washed out circles...

"ezoterick soundzcapes" flow like a translucent sea on a wasted shore, pinpointing some dormant energies...
