Bryant Davis – Eyes Ears (PandaFuzz, 2010)

It feels damn good when something comes over email and then manifests itself into the physical realm. Pushing another person to dig deeper, look further, and work harder is…well it is hard. In the case of Bryant Davis this was easy and the output….inspiring. Bryant works in a variety of mediums and has some stellar projects posted on his website. Here Bryant takes a simplified route cutting out the computer age and going right to the black obelisk of the 80s childhood…the television. He modified the television to accept incoming audio signals, working in his classic slightly harsh but awakening style for the audio source. Mr. Davis lets it burn slow in good fashion here…..please enjoy the limited fidelity of these experiments….find your bearings inside the tube….they call on you to push yourself further too!

I work with both experimental video and audio. I have also been working on visualizing sound. For this project I modified a cathode ray tube television so that incoming audio signals are rendered to the screen by the electron beam as an image.

Martin Back – Unstable Rotation Centers (PandaFuzz, 2010)

Martin is a composer living currently in Denton, TX. What struck me right away when Martin first contacted me was not only the difference between his work and previous things released on pandafuzz, but also the striking differences between his work and my own. Not only did I enjoy listening to his stuff but it intrigued me and brought me into a world I do not often venture into. Martin has studied comosition and has also studied privately with David Dunn. Describing his own work:

"My work covers a lot of general ground...sound installation, graphic scores, field recording, just intonation and microtonal tunings, drone, and language-variants-as-music, to name but some. Most of my work, specifically/theoretically deals with problems of authorship (as I take much of my compositional material from sources outside of my own ego) and novelty. I also seriously explore composition to the point that graphic scores become as precise as notated music. "

It is a humid and roasted evening in 2003…Mid summer in York,PA somewhere on Linden avenue…A now vacated place where creativity and home brew flowed with equal importance and strength for many years with the vastly creative Peter Richards at the helm….It was here that I first met Erich Steiger…a friendship that would have an ebb and flow not much different than the small brook that ran behind my house growing up….At times clear and fresh….teeming with life….Other times but a trickle…A gouge in the earth to let you know it is still alive and waiting to be replenished…Over the years we would come together on projects such as mastering or just a social event and for months at a time be in and out of communication…

By 2009 a project called Loud & Sad with Joe Houpert had become an all encompassing life project…We needed someone to give us proper recordings of piano and Erich was the logical choice…Some months later we were at Baltimore at Erich’s antilog compound working on those piano mixes and adding some tape layers when HMS was born through a late Friday night improvisation…. HMS has allowed Joe and I to completely step out form our sometimes preconceived placements in Loud & Sad to explore completely new places…higher grounds and hidden passages that lined the cliffs we were climbing as Loud & Sad but had not yet taken the time to explore…With Erich as our guide and new participant we proudly present to you these new places….

The artwork for this release was provided by Mike Homer, current director of the david kordansky gallery, who has been a friend of loud & sad related project for a long time. Mike shared this work with me as he was creating it and after seeing it in person on his bedroom wall I knew it was the right fit. Please download the ZIP for a full size version!

Xarhope - Musique Pour Bande Dessinée (PandaFuzz, 2010)

In the world of internet music, xarhope seems to be a rather popular name. Xarhope is Samuel Ufus and after several months of emails and a few different albums I am happy to present to you musique pour bande dessine´e. When attempting to select a new pandafuzz release rarely am I looking for melodic elements that appeal to me, or even an aesthetic that connects them all. What I am really after is the attraction of something new and in the case of xarhope every album is completely new. One never knows what to expect and one is consistently surprised with the results. While you may not be immediately attracted to the busking free jazz nature of this new xarhope album….I invite you to open your windows….bring in the sounds of the streets or forest….and play this album at a very high volume.

A brief description from xarhope:
“…sounds recorded in the street and at home in different cities in arab countries like lebanon jordan and cairo, I did some kind of rude zen jams with musicians and non musicians, just people i meet in the places i stayed… we used short instruments as jawharp, bells, harmonica, tibetan bowl, castanholas, metal plates, toys and other objects that we can find in the kitchen and in the living room… the sounds from the street were recorded in cairo…”

Julia LaDense - Trip (PandaFuzz, 2010)

Very happy to present our 20th release from Julia LaDense, entitled Trip. I first discovered Julia’s work through my good buddy Tyler at Electric Tapes, he released I Vote Everyday a few months back and I highly recommend it. From there I discovered a handful of other Julia releases and you can keep up with them through her via her website.

It is not just the stark minimalism that first put attention on her music, it is also the bold attitude presented behind it, that makes it clear she makes music for the pure enjoyment of it. Much like our last release from Leonardo Martins, this is a fine example of music without pretense.

“It’s a vast matter – if someone reads the title “Quick McLuhanian Guide for Transmigration”, he or she could think that it’s about the soul “jumping” from a body to other. I believe McLuhan had in mind that the message would become a fusion of perceptions caused by and brought by (mass) communication media. Is the media the message as well? Back to Pythagoras, he assured that he could remember all his transmigrations, but if he stopped to think of them he wouldn’t have time enough to life his (present) life. We know how we´re born, how our conception happens, but don´t know about what we were before it or after we have finally been…

A message nowadays is easily materialized as the physic body of a book to be spread (for example). So Pythagoras was not that wrong if he had his soul embodied to a book.

McLuhan also told that the evolution of technologies are bringing us back to a new tribal life, and the increasing segmentation of arts, culture and information. In times when we need quick information sharing, society development needs art to solve this paradox…”
