Wavespan & The Ghost Between the Strings – From Our Hands a Darkling Light (Webbed Hand Records, 2011)

01 Ghostwave Theorem 37:20
02 Valley of the Stones 07:08

In many ways, a collaboration between Wavespan and The Ghost Between the Strings is long overdue. Both artists have released music on Treetrunk and Webbed Hand, both artists specialize in ambient drone, and both use organic sounds as the sources for these drones. While Wavespan has utilized gongs, bridges, bells, Tibetan singing bowls, pianos, and metal sculptures to produce his drone works, TGBTS has focused on the guitar as his primary sound source.

“Wavespan contacted TGBTS several months ago about a collaboration, and received a series of guitar improvisations in early January (2011). Excerpts of these improvisations were processed by Wavespan and treated to various forms of signal processing, including: time stretching, reverb, delay, distortion, amp/cabinet emulation, and filtering. Next, Wavespan went to work on the centerpiece of the album, ‘Ghostwave Theorem.’ After assembling a rough structure for the piece, he began adding some of his own processed field recordings to the mix. At this point, Wavespan cut-up a gritty jazz loop, to which he applied further processing. For the finishing touch, excerpts from Michael Saunders’ The Labyrinth of Music Theory podcast were processed and added to the mix.

“The second, shorter piece, ‘Valley of the Stones,’ was assembled from some of the remaining improvisations that were not utilized for the first. In addition, Wavespan added some processed field recordings to complete the mix.

“Wavespan would like to extend a special thank you to Rurik Leffanta (xoxos), whose ‘23_words’ VST was utilized to create the endlessly varying permutations of the jazz loop you hear throughout the piece. In addition, Wavespan and TGBTS are grateful to Michael Saunders (Metatheseus), who graciously permitted the sampling of his podcast.

No-xygen – …Entry to a Defiled Reverie… (Webbed Hand Records, 2011)

01 The Deserted 05:00
02 Shadows of Oblivion 06:45
03 Move To An Entry To A Defiled Reverie 09:32
04 Surrounded By Solitude 06:58

No-xygen is dark/ambient project from Greece which started in 2007 by Manos F. and Thanos M. The first release “towards the sun” was recorded in 2008 and it was a sample of space/ambient music. After more experimentations the music changed to something new, dark and eerie. In 2010 No-xygen released the second release entitled “u-235″ a more dark ambient/industrial album. This one led the project to release in 2011 the third album so far “…entry to a defiled reverie…” which is also the landmark of no-xygen’s sound and of the direction we follow so far.

[mikra] – Attalla2 (Webbed Hand Records, 2011)

01 Attalla2 [01:59:17]

“Now it is a little about itself and about the given two-hour material. Was born and live in the city of Minsk which is capital of last dictatorial state of Europe (at present) @ Belarus. To me 34 years. It is dissolved. There is a daughter who is called by Nastya, and its voice is on ATTALLA2. There is a girlfriend with whom I want to connect all remained life. Her name is Nadya – and is present its image on a cover to music. ATTALLA2 – very personal intimate (for me) work. In it I tell about myself, by means of the primitive computer and analog old Soviet synthesizers. I haven’t dared to divide all sounding into separate parts as it is often accepted because then integrity of my history and the concept put in music would be broken. I can only advise – to perceive the given work as film viewing … a film about me, my life and my love.. Thanks for attention)))” —

Nasienie returns with an EP of finely produced ambient soundscapes.

Despite its brevity, this trio of ambient compositions seems to expand the experience of time itself.

‘Insomnia’ inspired by an original “Insomnia” movie (1997) and Robin Rimbaud aka Scanner. Pure ambient.
‘Old Enough To Know Better’ – kind of abstract hop, I guess.”

This ambient concept album crafted with piano and effected guitar bring to mind a melancholy film soundtrack.
Webbed Hand Records

“This album is a process of hours and hours of working without sleep. Isolated in a room, with just a laptop, guitar and piano. It can be seen as the melancholy of a bitter old man who will die in a few minutes. Enjoy!

…The work is open for interpretation, for me personal it’s about a period in my life, I see it as the last minutes of recalling memories before the death of the person…

It’s the second album made as “Uitgezonderd”, first one, “Only the Lonely” was more drone/noise, and this style has evolved to the sound in this album.”

Rain is a series of conceptual tracks produced for Webbed Hand Records. Each “Rain” is a CD-length ambient recording ideal for quiet listening while meditating, writing, or going to sleep. Typically the recordings in this series are minimalistic soundscapes, with motifs played out cyclically rather than progressively, in order to induce relaxed states.

07 Power is Singular(5:12)
08 The Existence of Money(4:16)

Mathew Sforcina from Australia and Sun-Inside from Ukraine join up as Catalyst Fantasy on this experimental/electronic work.

The project of two musicians living in different parts of the world:
Matthew Sforcina (Australia) – vocals
Sun-Inside (Ukraine) – music

This well-produced collaborative effort stands out very distinctly among the variety of electronica artists operating today, though to my mind it is reminiscent of the pioneering works of neo-dada industrial groups like Cabaret Voltaire and Coil, a very high commendation indeed. However the themes explored are very uniquely those of the artists, and despite the great distance between them they bring it all together as if they share a studio.

The Musk-rat Cult – The Last Mark of the Upcoming End (Webbed Hand Records, 2010)

01 Lead Your Plough Through the Bones of the Dead 10:00
02 The Monster 03:13
03 The cry of all things that are going to die 12:32

These abstract dark ambient works by the Musk-rat Cult approach sound from a painterly perspective.

When asked to describe this album, here’s what the artist said:
“It’s hard to write something about this album, the idea was to create music that’s like an abstract painting – everyone can hear something different in it. I’m a painter, so I’m always surprised with what other people can see while looking at my paintings. Sometimes they see it as something completely different from what I thought while creating them. I wanted this album to be as abstract as possible and I think it works. There were a lot of different oppinions about it, someone told me, that it sounds like a soundtrack to David Lynch’s movies (which may be true, I’m a big fan of those), someone else said it’s more like a musical way of describing mental disorder or a psychedelic trip.
While recording this album I used a lot of strange noises, some of them are animal sounds with some effects used on them, others are radio noises. I even used a noise that my radio started making during an aurora in Iceland. I don’t think anyone else have ever used this sounds to create music.

…TLMOTUE is the 4th album by this project. First years of creating music as TMC (2005-2007) was just experimenting with different sounds and noises. There were a lot of demos, I put the best tracks together and that’s how the first official (at least for me, it was never released) record of TMC was created. It’s a 10-track EP called “Mechanical Bananas, Rubber Spoons and Jelly Mutants from Outer Space”. I think the title tells a lot about how it sounds, it’s like a strange, psycho child of Monty Python and Merzbow.

Between 2008 and 2009 I used to play in many different bands, I needed something different, something made only by myself. That’s when I thought about creating something as The Musk-rat Cult again. Before I used to think about it as something not really serious, but at that moment I thought that I can make it something more than just a way to kill some time. I started creating new music, that was still very noisy, but it became darker. That’s how the second EP called “Enema” was created.

After “Enema” I felt that the idea for this project in that shape is over. That’s why just after recording “Enema” I started working on the first “real” album as TMC. The name of it was supposed to be “Hidden Faces and Surreal Voices”, but finally I changed it to “Mutatis Mutandis (Hidden Faces and Surreal Voices)” Again the title tells it all – mutatis mutandis which means “the necessary changes having been made” is a perfect way to describe the way I felt while creating this music. It is probably the first record by TMC where I haven’t used only noises and different sounds, but I combined them with more traditional sounds and real instruments.”

we record the sounds we find free out there, then we manipulate them, some guitars or voices may be found live or sampled… our best instrument is a record player and a lot of vinyls stacked there asking for our mercy…
some people found this disc accidentally, we tend to do this…
all the others should use headphones in order to underline all sounds…”

More work from a recording project described as “haunted head music to disturb your inner child.” Saluki Regicide was the first major project of C.P. McDill and he still considers it his primary one. It was originally most active 2003-04, then sporadically thereafter, usually in the form of collaborations and long-form works. This album signals a return to the original style of working as Saluki Regicide, and even hints at future directions.

Black Aurora - Veil (Webbed Hand Records, 2010)

01 Veil 09:37
02 The Church of Apprehension 10:43
03 Sepia 14:25
04 Radiance 06:42
05 Gates to Oblivion 12:10

The concept behind the music of Black Aurora was to invoke a dark and empty atmosphere that at certain times would let light shine in, only to engulf it after it had shone too long. Between heavy, droning guitars, dark ambient pads, and the occasional use of church bells and orchestral strings, the music of Black Aurora is not only music, but an experience in creating a one of a kind atmosphere that brings the listener in, and wont let them out until the final droning note fades away.
