Henrik Rylander - Public Loudspeakers: Information & Disinformation (Kning Disk, 2007)

1 Information & Disinformation For Public Loudspeakers 59:58

Public Loudspeakers: Information and Disinformation is a document of a power and control system, as common as the CCTV cameras and with a long history of war propaganda, here for the first time revealed and exposed in an art context. The sound source is the data from the .tif files of the photographs in the original book, processed with various computer software. The result is 58 minutes of powerful drone music filled with information and disinformation.

Fujiyama, take me too, Now she’s gone my life is through, Fujiyama …
show me where she stood and fell, then i’ll stand and fall as well, Fujiyama
When she heard I died at sea, she was bent on joining me, Fujiyama …
Unbeknown to her I’d live, till I’d have a life to give, Fujiyama …
coming home i’d come to lean, travel on until I’m free, Fujiyama…
Fujiyama, when I’m gone, Tell the world that love lives on, Fujiyama

5 Mirrors
6 Descension Day
7 Apparition
8 Faded flowers

I wrote the music, or improvised the music, and played the piano. I also chose the found sounds and did the electronic processing and arrangements. Rachel breathed, spoke and sang. Greg provided certain sounds in the bass register. Some voices are those of narrator "Secrets", who reads for Librivox.org. "Descension Day" features double bass bowed harmonics played by Houston Guy, courtesy of user "Stomachache" on Freesound.org. "Yes, please yes" is based around dialogue samples borrowed from the BBC Radio 4 Woman's Hour Drama "Sacred Hearts". Special thanks to J.C. for sharing his personal collection with me. Carl Sagan's Ghost - Before I Go (Audio Gourmet, 2010)

1 Before I Go (Part One)
2 Before I Go (Part Two)

For our 24th release, we are delighted to welcome Carl Sagan's Ghost to the Audio Gourmet netlabel catalog.

Carl Sagan's Ghost is Daniel Davis from the USA who has had work released on Earth Mantra, Soft Phase, Circlesandlines and Luxus-Arctica Records International. Since the early nineties, Daniel has been heavily involved with music of varying styles from ska bands right through to the beautifully crafted ambient soundscapes he has built a reputation for recently.

Although he possesses an immense talent with producing ambient, as an artist he feels that he shouldn't focus entirely on one style of music.
So he has just a couple more ambient releases scheduled for release before he heads off in a different direction with other musical projects and ideas.
'Before I Go' is one of the last projects as Carl Sagan's Ghost for the time being and is an aptly titled ambient/drone EP in two parts. For Audio Gourmet it represents a slight change in style of ambient, after the recent dark and more vacant material. It is warm, refreshing and thoroughly well put together...

Irisono - 2003-2005 (TecnoNucleo, 2010)

01 Yooco
02 AliBaba
03 Odinacusis
04 Odaxelagnia
05 Yooco bis

Javier Iriso IRISONO was born in León (Spain) and comes from a family with a strong musical tradition. He studied music in the Salamanca and León Conservatories, where he acquired degrees as a piano teacher and as a superior-level teacher of Music Theory and Solfa. He has taught Music Theory in several Conservatories since 1990. He has been using computers and modern technology for composing since the year 2000.

Yooco and AliBaba are his first works using electronics, after a period dedicated to the in-depth study of so-called classical music.

I wrote the last quaver of "Atman" for a violin, flute, marimba and vibraphone quartet on 31st December, 1999 (this piece has not yet had its debut) and then I went back to electronics. I knew it would be a long time before I wrote anything on manuscript paper again, and in fact I have not 'written' anything except for special occasions, such as for exams or contests.
Javier Iriso

These two pieces use the same sound files: vinyl records treated with knives and a scrubber and records made of cardboard and adhesive tape in a "noise" session which took place in my living-room. Yooco investigates the rhythmic fluctuations produced by the harmonics of a D major chord. I used a virtual organ and its registers to make the harmonics audible and to be able to manipulate them. In this sense it could be performed on a conventional organ. In AliBaba, the main part of the composition is made with a pro-53 synthesizer (virtual as well). The use of treated records (LP's) is more decisive in this piece, where I've used a vinyl edition of the story of AliBaba and the Forty Thieves and a single (45) of The Art of Noise.

Odinacusis and Odaxelagnia are two pieces composed in 2005 and can be understood as a duet of violins which have been substituted by two MS20 (virtual) synthesizers in Odinacusis and two Pro 54 in Odaxelagnia. They were conceived as pieces that can be manipulated in real time, and they both had their debut in Palencia in 2006. The version of Odinacusis included here was made in 2010 for this edition.

Pablo Ribot with God Pussy - Interruptor Magnetic (Torn Flesh Records, 2010)

01 - Hitchcock's Dream
02 - Heat Of The Night
03 - Nasa Report
04 - The Cold Of Days
05 - Retro-Invasion
06 - Interruptor Magnetic

Available enjoy new musical work in collaboration by Pablo Ribot (Argentina) and God Pussy (Brazil). 'Interruptor Magnetic', combines the different styles among the musicians merging in an impressive mixture of noise, contemporary music and idm.

The immediacy of the images, the mystery of a poem, and the metaphor from the sound textures, provide means to approach a new state of contemplation.

Technology and the subsequent alienation are presented from a retro point of view, urging to meditate upon the processes of perception.

Bent technology and glitch theory are in dialogue within the concept of the composition. Drama, nostalgia and random forms are part of the free-style developed throughout the EP.

Martin Back – Unstable Rotation Centers (PandaFuzz, 2010)

1 (maximal) minor mutations
2 Music for Early June
3 TrafficCricket/LaundryMoth
4 Unstable Rotation Centers

Martin is a composer living currently in Denton, TX. What struck me right away when Martin first contacted me was not only the difference between his work and previous things released on pandafuzz, but also the striking differences between his work and my own. Not only did I enjoy listening to his stuff but it intrigued me and brought me into a world I do not often venture into. Martin has studied comosition and has also studied privately with David Dunn. Describing his own work:

"My work covers a lot of general ground...sound installation, graphic scores, field recording, just intonation and microtonal tunings, drone, and language-variants-as-music, to name but some. Most of my work, specifically/theoretically deals with problems of authorship (as I take much of my compositional material from sources outside of my own ego) and novelty. I also seriously explore composition to the point that graphic scores become as precise as notated music. "

Alex Durlak - Lowing (Audio Gourmet, 2010)

1 Lowing (Section 1)
2 Lowing (Section 2)
3 Lowing (Section 3)

Next up on Audio Gourmet, something a little different from Toronto based artist and musician Alex Durlak.
Alex is responsible for running a printing company and record label, Standard Form. It is here where the 'Rural Route' 3" CD series is based, with the label's curation being managed by Damian Valles.
The entire Rural Route catalog is manufactured in-house and it was here where Alex Durlak had his first release.

So to the follow up to his work on Rural Route...a 15 minute EP of gritty bass guitar drones which will please fans of dark ambient, drone and experimental music. This EP entitled 'Lowing', was constructed entirely with a bass guitar which was ran through a self-written granular synthesis patch in real-time.
There was no additional processing and editing was kept to a minimum as to preserve the integrity of the performance.
Given the minimalist production techniques, this 3 track EP turns out to be surprisingly detailed as a whole. There is an air of mystery to the recordings that is underpinned throughout by a wealth of powerful gritty elements.

As is often the case, a brief 15 minute excursion on the Audio Gourmet netlabel will usually serve as a warm up for something bigger lined up by the artist...and Alex has informed me that his next venture will be a one sided 12" record as the first part of a new series called 'Long Form'. This will be on Standard Form; curated by Alex himself.

Experimentation with a unique personal touch and perspective... Influences are varied and the overall effect is like listening to a Rothko or Jackson Pollock painting.

Asmus Tietchens & David Lee Myers - 60:00 (Line, 2004)

1 One 10:00
2 Two 10:00
3 Three 10:00
4 Four 10:00
5 Five 10:00
6 Six 10:00

LINE is proud to present 60:00, the fourth collaborative album from influential electronic music pioneers Asmus Tietchens and David Lee Myers. On their first three collaborative projects the working method for this pairing was essentially the same: Myers provided Tietchens with raw feedback sound banks and the later constructed the compositions from this source material using his varied processing and editing techniques. For 60:00 this approach was altered; again beginning from the feedback sources, tracks were repeatedly exchanged between the two composers, transformations and edits by each resulting in several levels of manipulation. In the final pieces, the particular contributions of each composer can no longer be precisely identified.

Asmus Tietchens' first released his unique electronic music in 1980. Since then he has produced about 30 more cutting edge recordings on numerous international labels dealing with electronic sound and conctrete music. Other collaborationive projects include the ongoing Kontakt der Junglinge with Thomas Koner. Tietchens' focus is the manipulation of found sound in ways suggested by the material itself. German label Die Stadt has begun to reissue his groundbreaking early works on cd in limited edition. His latest critically acclaimed project, a series based strictly on sine tones and white noise is the Mengen series released by Ritornell/Mille Plateaux (Alpha-, Beta- and Gamma-Menge). Tietchens' series in scheduled to continue on LINE in 2005.

David Lee Myers is a sound and visual artist living in New York City. He has created music based on feedback principles since 1987 using his unique "feedback machines." As Arcane Device, and more recently under his own name, Myers has had twenty recordings released on numerous noted international labels. In the Fall of 2003 ReR Megacorp rereleased his classic Engines of Mythalbum on CD. Using the portable feedback apparatus, Myers continues to perform in the US and Europe, and exhibits his paintings and prints based on electronic traces generated by Feedback Music.
Line

Asmus Tietchens has done a lot of collaborations with a lot of people, but I believe the most work was done with David Lee Myers (the guy that used to be Arcane Device, and who is now back under his own name). '60.00' is their fourth collaboration and it's first in which the working principle was changed. Before Myers send raw sound material to Tietchens who transformed and made the compositions. Here blocks of sound were send back and forth all the time and each did his share of processing. In the end, it's not clear who did what. A collaboration as it's supposed to be, I believe. The principle sound source is still feedback, but don't let that scare you off. The feedback sounds here all transformed in such a way that there is no harsh tone to be found. Instead the gentle sounds have only vaguely something in common with feedback sounds. Compared with the previous three collaborations they did, it seems that they have now moved in the areas of computer processed sounds. A track like 'five' seems to be built out of dsp-plug ins treating the feedback on a microscopic level. Tietchens recent album for Ritornell went already in that direction and here it is extended a little bit more. Small loops, going through various computer programms make this into a most delicate work, resulting in the most finest work of the two to date. And this work doesn't sound like their end station, so this fruitfull collaboration will be even more fruitfull in the future.
