little reminder: the first four of the highly recommended serie Ante Algo Azul by Nicholas Szczepanik are out

So the first four pieces in the massive Ante Algo Azul project are now finished. A big, sincere thank you goes out to the subscribers of the project and their support. If one is still interested in subscribing, you would receive the first four pieces in the project up to this point, plus all of the eight new upcoming pieces. To subscribe, please click here.

06 Yenisei 6'04''

08 Work Wood Forest 6'43''
09 Radiologos 4'20''
10 Ignalina's Sunset 3'51''
«When it was born in the mind of italian musician Guglielmo Cherchi, 'Peaceful Atom' was intended to be a concept work about the Chernobyl disaster, and as a result of this some tracks are ideally connected to that topic: the title track (referring to the name of the first RBMK - Reactor Bolshoy Moshchnosty Kanalny - reactor), SCRAM (the emergency shutdown of a nuclear reactor), Lava Flow (the melted material erupted from the reactor after the explosion), Leaving Pripyat (the evacuation of the nearest city to the powerplant), Worm Wood Forest (the dead trees killed by the radiations) and Ignalina's Sunset (Ignalina was the last nuclear powerplant to use a RBMK reactor, the same model involved in the Chernobyl disaster, which was only shut down in 2009).
The other songs don't belong to this concept but are related to the environment pollution problem in Russia: Oka and Yenisei are the two most polluted rivers in the planet; Pylons refers to the Shukhov towers (featured on the cover artwork), which were electricity pylons on the banks of the Oka river. The remaining track, Radiologos, is a stand-alone song, but features an original jingle aired in Soviet Russia's radio stations.
'Peaceful Atom' was entirely built from scratch using laptop-based synthesizers and electric guitar, with the exception of a few samples. On 'Worm Wood Forest': Arboretum Bad Grund by Inchadney at The Free Sound Project, on 'Radiologos': Soviet jingle and radio recordings taken with an old military tubes HF radio and on 'Leaving Pripyat': electrostatic hiss taken from an old Kenwood amplifier dating from the eighties at high volume.
Enjoy this release.»

Jérémie Mathes - Gjöll out soon on Basses Fréquences!

After a first release on Mystery Sea, sound artist Jeremie Mathes presents us with his second album. ”Gjöll“ is a timeless navigation into foggy unknown waters and subterranean passages inspired by scandinavian mythology. Dense evolving drones from acoustic sounds and micro-structured patterns are slowly drained like submerged organic debris in the flow of current. Extracting fragments of his surrounding environment, Jeremie succeeds at transforming matter into metaphorical visions and mesmerizing soundscapes that lead blindly into a serene world…

Daughter Of The Industrial Revolution - Path Of Least Resistance (Ono, 2008)

1 Little Did You Know About The Coming Storm 7:20
2 Opening Night 19-12-07 6:40
3 A Concise History Of The Last 50 Years Of Anger And Betrayal 7:28
Something of a departure from the Ono label's series of avant-garde mixtapes, this release features original material recorded by label founder Michael Holland with Miles Whittaker of MLZ and Modern Love notoriety. With a little further assistance from a number of friends, these two have carved out three freeform electronic narratives, calling upon a veritable laboratory of vintage instruments, including such rare treats as the ETI Vocoder, the Waldorf 4-Pole and Crumar Multiman. The subsequent compositions shift from the drone complexities offered by the first piece, overflowing with rich synth string textures and obscure signal twitches to a darker, more primitive configuration on the second, which dabbles in industrial textures and metallic, early-electronic timbres, coated in bleak, filtered echo. Finally, a third piece brings the aesthetic right up to date, taking on a kind of organic techno persona not entirely dissimilar to some of Vadislav Delay's more experimental moments. There's a clear dub influence, but none of this sounds like some rigid, sequenced production, instead there's an organic, naturally evolving quality to the rhythmic pulsations on show, keeping the music well within the bounds of an experimental mindset. A host of collaborators are credited with having got involved with the recordings, although there's no too-many-cooks issues on show here; this music comes across as supremely disciplined and strictly realised, with a keen, exploratory ear navigating the project. Excellent.

James Wyness - Music Born Of Solitude (Con-V, 2011)

1 Music Born Of Solitude
… for four hand-made (e)bowed zithers tuned to the Eikosany, a 20-tone just intonation structure devised by American theorist Erv Wilson.
The four parts were recorded individually, then the work was assembled digitally according to a conceptual score, most unlike a conventional musical score An offset digitally reversed version of the original created a retrograde canon, a device favoured by early choral composers. Apart from that no digital effects or processes were necessary - what the listener hears is the sound of a justly intoned quartet of acoustic instruments.

PHILIPPE PETIT is interested in soundtracks; even if he creates original music he'd rather be introduced as a "musical travel agent" than a composer.
PETIT uses a Cymbalum, an Electric Psalterion, computer and synths to build up electronic layers, process acoustic and field recordings. To second the machines he likes to move various glasses, or percussive objects, and take advantage of vinyl material to fondle released sounds.
A journalist for various magazines and radio as well as a musical activist, PETIT has celebrated his 25th year of sharing his musical passions as the man behind the cult labels Pandemonium Rdz. and BiP_HOp.
PETIT has assembled what people call a dream-team of collaborators, working with: Lydia Lunch, Foetus, Kumo, Scott McCloud (Girls Against Boys), Cosey Fanni Tutti, My Brightest Diamond, Sybarite, Pantaleimon, Graham Lewis (Wire), Barry Adamson, Scanner, Mira Calix, Kammerflimmer Kollektief, Guapo, Leafcutter John, Simon Fisher Turner, Justin Broadrick and many more...
Aside his solo works, PETIT is active in Strings Of Consciousness, does a duo with Lydia Lunch, and his collab with James Johnston (Gallon Drunk/Bad Seeds/Faust) just appeared on Dirter Promotions.
His first solo album 'Henry: The Iron Man' was released thru Beta Lactam Ring Records, second one 'Silk-screened' is published on Trace Recordings and upcoming is 'A Scent Of Garmambrosia' CD on Aagoo + a picture-disc single with Cosey Fanni Tutti on Dirter Promotions. In the works are collabs with Murcof, Simon Fisher Turner, ASVA, Vultures and "Cordophony" gathering music whose sound comes from the vibrations of one or several strings.

The dark arts of Miles Whittaker (aka MLZ, and part of the Demdike Stare, Pendle Coven and several other covert projects) have been casting their spell over listeners for the better half of this decade. His peerless record collection and associated vinyl addiction have largely informed his ouevre, roving from the blackest doom metal to glacial nordic electronics, layered drones, shuffled House, Berlin dub and Detroit techniques. His uber-dark new project Daughter Of The Industrial Revolution is the place where he can indulge those passions in solo mode over three 3" CDs for the bespoke Cotton Goods label. We've only got a slight clue what the title alludes to, but we can tell you that 'Legislation For The Nation' opens the set with a hazy piece of ambience recalling the overloaded-but-subdued ferric tones of Kevin Drumm, while 'Transistor Blues' sounds like the residue of an analogue MLZ session, where the machines have been left to their own devices, creating spectral impressions of Berlin dub. 'Shape 4' follows with a grey slate-and-sandstone toned slab of doomy atmospherics, while the acid reflux of 'Photon Shopping' coats the ears in an abstracted 303 residue. The lengthy 'Nutrient Flush' is the album's centrepiece, paying tribute to the isolationist bleeps of Mika Vainio with potent tones patiently given time to seep through the system to achieve the required results. As usual the amazingly packaged discs are housed in bespoke handmade sleeves inside customised microfilm boxes that have been individually numbered. Totally amazing music - blink and you'll miss out forever.

Coldstream - Drown/Lights (Rural Colours, 2011)

1 Drown/Lights
2 Medium Aisle
Coldstream is a London-based musician and sound artist Dan Mumford who creates his music using guitars, melodica, piano, old tape recordings, synths, percussion and field recordings. To date Dan has releases out on Under the Spire, Audio Gourmet, Aether Everywhere & Vikomt.
Drown/Lights ep contains two tracks both recorded from the same session which are based around treated guitar and bass guitar, but also incorporate some old synths, piano and organ. What makes these tracks interesting is the field recordings that are woven into them; these were recorded during a trip through the Cascade Mountains in the Pacific North West of America and are recordings of forests, wildlife and AM radio broadcasts from the area.

Spheruleus - Debris (Audio Gourmet, 2011)

1 Debris #1 06:27
2 Debris #2 06:03
3 Debris #3 07:29
4 Debris #4 03:51
For the first Spheruleus outing of 2011, Audio Gourmet label curator Harry Towell has scoured his hard-drive to put together a collection of tracks that are born out of unfinished samples and discarded parts of previous projects. They have been presented as a four track EP which is aptly titled 'Debris'.
The source material was drawn from the usual collection of instrument samples that Towell's work typically comprises of, although heavily processed with 'vintage' style ambient production techniques. The resulting soundtrack is loose and drifting with moments of hiss and static - a production style that you might not always associate with the work of Spheruleus.
The aim was to draw out the near 24 minute duration as long as possible, giving the impression of time standing still and allowing these otherwise unused sounds a chance to have their 'day'.
2011 is to be a big year for Spheruleus, with CD album 'Voyage' scheduled for release on Hibernate this summer and another short album coming out on Resting Bell at the end of February. Not to mention the debut Paper Relics album recorded with brother Stuart due out in March/April...

Spheruleus – Forgotten Outland (Resting Bell, 2011)

1 Wilting Bounds
2 Grey Haze
3 Grass Stands Green
The sound-art of Spheruleus is produced by British artist Harry Towell with a previous discography including releases on the likes of Under The Spire, Earth Mantra and Test Tube as well as his own label Audio Gourmet. Intrigued by all things old and rustic, his music is often inspired by the rural Lincolnshire surroundings in which he lives and his first outing of 2011, here on Resting Bell, is intended to really captured this.
A short collection of deliberately loose and degraded instrument samples and field recordings, ‘Forgotten Outland’ is presented as if it were an old record found discarded inside a derelict farm building on disused land.
It comprises of blurred melodic passages and offers a faded insight into times gone by when the farmland thrived. Just like the physical state of the farm itself, the record sounds timeworn, warped and a shadow of its former self.
The instrument leads and various sounds climb over one another as if fighting for a voice. Nothing seems structured or in order, although amidst the deluge of disjointed melody, subtle detail can be focused upon to reveal parts of this purposefully concealed soundtrack.

Michael Delia & Simon Whetham - Live At Školská 28 (Crónica, 2011)

1 Live At Školská 28 23:14
Michael Delia and Simon Whetham collaborative performance recorded at the Školská 28 gallery space in Prague Saturday 20th November 2010.
Simon Whetham was invited to perform at Školská 28, Prague, on 20th November 2010. In addition to playing his signature solo field recording composition, using only recordings captured in Prague in the week preceding the concert, he also requested to be introduced to local musicians in order to collaborate and improvise with them. Miloš Vojtěchovský, Director of Školská 28 put Simon in contact with US artist and sometime Prague resident Michael Delia.
After a brief meeting and an exchange of CD's they played an improvised collaborative set, Michael playing various instruments through effects and Simon playing field recordings and processing some of Michael's sounds.

Simon Whetham - Cold Shoulder (Audio Gourmet, 2011)

1 Cold Shoulder (Part 1.1) 02:51
2 Cold Shoulder (Part 1.3) 07:19
3 Cold Shoulder (Part 2) 06:45
Simon Whetham has been capturing and composing almost primarily with field recordings since taking part in a research trip to Iceland in 2005.
Since then he has been gaining a steadily increasing profile: exhibiting in Iceland; recording in the Amazon Rainforest of Brazil; performing at a large number of festivals and events, both nationally and internationally, notably the recent Madeiradig 2010; having work accepted for release by labels such as Cronica, And/OAR, Dragon's Eye, Con-V, Trente Oiseaux, 1000fussler, Mystery Sea, Entr’acte, Install, Lens and Gruenrekorder; commissioned by Creative Labs to build a surround sound installation to demonstrate their equipment and software; commissioned by painter Kathryn Thomas to compose a surround soundtrack to accompany her ‘Lightyears’ series of exhibitions; producing radio works for Resonance FM, Overlap.org and Kunst Radio Austria; and invited to participate in two residencies at the Art Container in Tallinn, Estonia, the second to compose new work, collaborate with other artists using sound and run deep listening, field recording and compostion workshops.
This residency has resulted in ‘Active Crossover’, a touring exhibition and exchange project which continues to tour through 2011 in four further exhibition spaces across the UK.
Future events and projects also include a performance at Experimental Intermedia in New York, and running field recording workshops in Bogota, Columbia.
Simon is based in Bristol, UK, where he has lived on and off for 14 years. Whilst much of his work is based around his travels, Simon took time out to record some sounds within his locality to make up an Audio Gourmet EP called 'Cold Shoulder'...
For four months Simon lived facing an industrial area of Bristol called St. Philips, where on quiet evenings he would wander around the buildings, listening to the city, but from somewhere very still and lifeless compared to it's daytime activity. Of course, as we all know, these areas are never silent. These nocturnal sounds of an area, normally crashingly loud, are the raw materials of 'Cold Shoulder (Parts 1 and 2)'
Simon has also put together a bonus track continuing from where he left off with this EP and it will be available to download as part of a forthcoming compilation album here on Audio Gourmet.

Listening Mirror - Wet Roads (Audio Gourmet, 2011)

1 Wet Roads 09:04
2 The Organist 08:44
In just a year of operation, Listening Mirror's Jeff Stonehouse and Kate Tustain have managed to put together a solid foundation to their discography with EPs out on Rural Colours and Heat Death Records. Their debut album then followed on Somehow Recordings later in 2010.
Sadly for the duo, Kate has decided to call it a day as part of Listening Mirror for personal reasons, leaving Jeff to carry forward the project. For one last excursion as the Listening Mirror duo, Jeff and Kate have assembled a two track EP called 'Wet Roads' to commemorate their work. The pieces act as bookends, with 'Wet Roads' being the very first piece of music they recorded together and 'The Organist' being the last.
To some of you, 'The Organist' in particular may feel quite familiar; this could be because a one minute edit was featured on the Audio Gourmet Coffee Break Ambient EP released last year.
Whilst this EP will always serve as space to reflect on how their sound first started out, we can thankfully anticipate a bright future for Listening Mirror as Jeff fully intends to carry forward the project.
The first solo excursion penned for release is to be a 3" cdr EP in an A3 folded poster, recorded as a tribute to the late Throbbing Gristle legend Peter Christopherson. This will be out very soon on Heat Death Records:
www.heatdeathrecords.co.uk
A final word from Jeff on this EP: "I'll miss Kate's input, the beauty and talent of which is evident in both of these tracks. We remain good friends, and I wish her the very best in her new adventures."

Wavespan & The Ghost Between the Strings – From Our Hands a Darkling Light (Webbed Hand Records, 2011)
01 Ghostwave Theorem 37:20
02 Valley of the Stones 07:08
In many ways, a collaboration between Wavespan and The Ghost Between the Strings is long overdue. Both artists have released music on Treetrunk and Webbed Hand, both artists specialize in ambient drone, and both use organic sounds as the sources for these drones. While Wavespan has utilized gongs, bridges, bells, Tibetan singing bowls, pianos, and metal sculptures to produce his drone works, TGBTS has focused on the guitar as his primary sound source.
“Wavespan contacted TGBTS several months ago about a collaboration, and received a series of guitar improvisations in early January (2011). Excerpts of these improvisations were processed by Wavespan and treated to various forms of signal processing, including: time stretching, reverb, delay, distortion, amp/cabinet emulation, and filtering. Next, Wavespan went to work on the centerpiece of the album, ‘Ghostwave Theorem.’ After assembling a rough structure for the piece, he began adding some of his own processed field recordings to the mix. At this point, Wavespan cut-up a gritty jazz loop, to which he applied further processing. For the finishing touch, excerpts from Michael Saunders’ The Labyrinth of Music Theory podcast were processed and added to the mix.
“The second, shorter piece, ‘Valley of the Stones,’ was assembled from some of the remaining improvisations that were not utilized for the first. In addition, Wavespan added some processed field recordings to complete the mix.
“Wavespan would like to extend a special thank you to Rurik Leffanta (xoxos), whose ‘23_words’ VST was utilized to create the endlessly varying permutations of the jazz loop you hear throughout the piece. In addition, Wavespan and TGBTS are grateful to Michael Saunders (Metatheseus), who graciously permitted the sampling of his podcast.
