I never heard of the Nixilx.Nijilx project (let alone how to pronounce it!), but apperentely he is a 19 year old guy from Greece. He recorded electric guitar, voice, microphone noise, toy drum, breath and some field recordings and in the electronic process of all of these sounds, he comes up with a very strong piece of lowercase microsound. None of the seperate sound sources are to be recognized and the whole things becomes an intelligent ambientesque blurr of sound. Though the material in itself is quite interesting, I must say that the three tracks are also alike, which in this instance of just under thirty minutes is not a real problem. I think if it would have been stretched longer, it would have maybe (!) leaped into boredom a bit. So far, so good.

Obstacle Phase 2 is actually a work of sound, video and animation, but this CD only presents the sound part. One long track of flowing, mostly dark sounds, with an occasional rhythm. The piece evolves quite slowly and has an ambient feel, but on close listening, one can hear subtle things that are not very ambient at all. Despite the dark sounds, the piece doesn't have a gloomy atmosphere, it has a pretty concrete character. That's what sets it apart from regular ambient. The rhythmic elements are very minimal, so there is no danger whatsoever of the track becoming flat or cheesy. The slow development of the work does not cause loss of attenttion, on the contrary: the tension is kept so well, that the whole piece is very captivating.

“All percussions and concussions created by Daniel Menche.” So says the inner sleeve and truer words were never spoken. What starts out sounding like a cover version of Steve Reich's Drumming—layer upon layer of pulsating percussion patterns—rapidly escalates into a thunderous inferno of Dionysian proportions. Once a gargantuan level of density is reached and the listener finds him/herself wholly trapped at the center of the vortex, the relentless onslaught becomes a Rorschach, its pummeling throb resembling the amplified patter of pelting rain at one moment and the violent thrum of rabid animal scratching the next. Disc one's track seven sounds as if the Portland-based sound artist placed a microphone at the center of a roaring fireplace or a hornet's nest (no surprise that the title of Menche's 1993 debut is Incineration).

Still, though Concussions adheres to its strict conceptual principle throughout, contrasts regularly emerge during the twenty untitled tracks. Patterns mirror one another in disc one's track three as their repetitions alternate from left to right while track four gathers them up and drops them into the center of a hellish cauldron, reducing them to a howling mass. It's at such moments that Menche's repudiation of the label 'noise artist' for 'sound sculptor' has merit and his so-called quest for 'vehement beauty' achieved. Interestingly, though the churning Concussions generally makes Reich's Drumming seem a microsound outing by comparison, Menche's drumming patterns move in and out of sync with one another in a manner that's not wholly unlike its renowned precursor. Yes, it's an overwhelming experience—literally so when the two discs total 114 minutes—and not a ride I plan on taking more than once, yet incredible nonetheless.

Hverfanda Hvél is Sachiko’s (Overhang Party, ex-Kousukoya) third solo album, after the purple vocal haze of You Never Atone For and the equally breathtaking Kunado, released last year on Utech. This one contains two, gutwrenching live performances at Tokyo’s Loopline. First track features Reiko.A of former Merzbow fame and travels through a thick, hazy fog of shimmering wordless vocals before collapsing face down in a pool of electronic voodoo damage. On the second, shorter piece Sachiko breathes out her zoned out mantra’s and washes of cosmic vocal beauty as if she’s honouring Yoshi Wada’s monumental spirit. A mesmerizing mayhem for real.

Pour cet album j'ai fait le choix délibéré d'utiliser mon quatre pistes cassettes, ainsi qu'un magnétophone à bande revox trouvé dans une brocante pour un prix modique.
Les bandes contenaient plusieurs sons pris aux alentours de chez moi entre Novembre 2008 et Janvier 2007 avec un micro parabolique.
Sur les cassettes avaient été capturées plusieurs sessions d'enregistrements réalisées "en salle de travail" (la salle de répétition "Le Jam" à la chapelle/erdre), entre Mars et Juin 2008 avec mon fils Ezeckiel, où il joue entre autres, du xylophone, de la guitare et de l'harmonica.
C'est début 2009 qu'en faisant du tri dans mes archives que je suis tombé sur ceux-ci.
J'ai alors décidé de faire un montage et un mixage du tout, via un MAO: magix music studio et audacity.
Le titre m'asété inspiré par le tableau de François Boucher représentant toute l'ambiguïté de la mythologie autour de Léda et le cygne.

For this album I made the deliberate choice to use my four-track tapes and a tape recorder revox found in a flea market for a low price.
The tapes contained sounds recorded around my home between November 2008 and January 2007 with a parabolic mic.
On the tapes had been captured several recording sessions made "in the labor room" (the rehearsal room "The Jam" at La Chapelle sur Erdre) conducted between March and June 2008 with my son Ezeckiel, where he played among other , xylophone, guitar and harmonica.
It is early 2009 sorting out in my archives I came across them.
I decided to make a montage and mixing at all.
The title was inspired by the painting by François Boucher representing the ambiguity of the mythology around Leda and the swan.

Being the huge devotee of David’s work that I am, it came as nothing short of an honor that he asked me personally to master and sequence the album for him. I can assuredly say that anyone who likes our work together as VCV or even some of my deeper ambient things like Leaves Painted Purple or some of the Eufloria soundtrack will LOVE this album. When the hard work of the day is done, and you go home and begin your nightly routine of winding down, there are only so many things that reciprocate that relaxed stillness. Here at Install, we're happy to say that we have the exact soundtrack for many of your sleepy evenings to come: David Tagg's newest album PENTECOST. Following in the wake of his Cold Spring Harbor EP, and utilizing a process that included using his grandfather's reel-to-reel tapes of organ playing for source sound, David has created what could be described as an "ambient novel". A superbly vivid work of musical nonfiction that tells the stories of 1000 photographs, long since forgotten memories and a crackling, eroded legacy, now exhumed from the dusty wine cellars of Tagg's sentimental estate. What all this wholly amounts to is a landmark recording, full of cool, subdued tones and soft shadowy movements. PENTECOST could be David's strongest ambient moment, if not only for consistency, but also for potency.

Pour sa première édition, Parisonic aborde les questions actuelles de notre relation à ce qui nous entoure, en présentant le travail d'artistes pour lesquels le son est le moyen, le matériau et le véhicule d'une attention, d'une sensibilité et d'un questionnement sur cet environnement.

Issu des pratiques documentaires et radiophoniques, le "field recording" (prise de son environnementale) investit aujourd'hui le champ des arts plastiques par des formes multiples débordant et ouvrant largement son cadre documentaire original.
Attentifs au monde qui les entoure les artistes dits "sonores" portent une attention particulière au contexte d’apparition de leur travail et le réalisent souvent en fonction de cet environnement, qu’il soit social, acoustique, architectural ou politique.

Diverses approches et contextes sont l'objet de l'attention de ces artistes :

* Sons produits par les êtres vivants aquatiques et terrestres, activité à la lisière de la science et de l'écologie.
* Phénomènes naturels : écoulement d'une rivière, vents et souffles, fonte des glaces…
* Paysages sonores "naturels", échos en montagne, espace sonore du désert, chant des dunes…
* Environnements urbains, chaque ville porte une "signature" sonore, acoustique d'un lieu, lieux de passage…
* Sons inaudibles : hydrophonie, rayonnement électromagnétiques, ultrasons…
* Architecture : vibrations dans les éléments de l'espace d'exposition, dans un immeuble…

Mark McGuire - Dream Team (Wagon, 2008)

This disc, split into three extended solo improvisations, features McGuire's signature post-rock build-ups while minimizing the proggy leanings that so much of his output has. While a lot of McGuire's stuff reads like the guitar part to an Emeralds song before inevitably building into some heavy momentum stuff, this one starts with a fuzzed out opener on "Dream Team 1." Almost Sonic Youth-y sound here, though much less constructed as distorted riffs intermingle and loop around one another before McGuire's vocals slip in to infuse some melody into the mirage. Quite lovely and unapologetically pretty stuff. "Different Light" follows up with a gloomier take, as thick oscillating drones move through some dense circuitry on their way toward the skies. Reminds me a bit of McGuire's playing on that Skyramps disc, totally epic wash whose parts are spread far outward before tiny little steel pan melodies formulate themselves sin the background like little dust mites congregating into an army. Whole thing clears itself eventually too, which only makes it more exquisite a journey.

The final track, "Dream Team 2," opens sounding more like much of the other McGuire stuff I've heard as fractured pieces with plenty of space are pieced together into a kind of post-minimalist, post-Cluster sound (yeah yeah, same associations everyone makes but you gotta admit that it's right on target...) that somehow ebbs its way into some celestial worlds all its own. I have to say, watching McGuire construct his set at Bard really makes all of this that much more interesting to listen to--his control is absurd, but never sterile, and his playing touches on so many realms that it enters itself into some next level areas. Drifting and lovingly constructed work that continues to build upon this already impressive dude's output. Super nice dude too, if you ever get a chance his shows are not to be missed. Put out on Emeralds' own Wagon label too, always a winning combo.

Aidan Baker is a very busy man. Not only is he a writer, he also plays music under no less than three monickers. His drone metal outfit Nadja, his avant prog experimental group ARC, and of course his solo work under his own name. Elsewhere on this week's list you'll find two other releases from Nadja, big beautiful lumbering slabs of slow motion sound, but here, on his latest solo endeavor, it's an entirely different situation. Gone are the beats and the downtuned guitars, the sludge, the doom, the dirge, leaving nothing but the drone. And even that is practically washed out into nothingness. Periodic is very subtle and quiet, ultra minimal drifts of microscopic sound. A few spikes pop up here and there, but for the most part it's a near flatline, a barely there wash of creaks and shimmers, whirs and rumbles, totally abstract soundscapes that require active listening to full grasp. Headphones transport the listener to another world. Under the sea, in some lost cave, floating in space, hard to tell exactly where you are with a head full of these sounds, which is why Baker is so good. Eyes closed, ears full, we are drifting lost in some parallel universe, where everything is tiny, a world of slowly shifting little pixels, or a world where everything is massive, so all we see are huge expanses of color and shape. So mysteriously dreamy. And of course highly recommended.
