Ryan Gregory Tallman (b. 1977) is an electro-acoustic composer, noise artist, sound experimentalist, multi-instrumentalist and improviser. Tallman’s primary compositional focus is the manipulation and exploitation of the inherent resonant frequencies of acoustic spaces—rendering his work site specific and experiential. As a graduate from the Master of Fine Arts in Electronic Music and Recording Arts program at Mills College, Tallman studied under Fred Frith, Pauline Oliveros, Maggie Payne, Chris Brown, Roscoe Mitchell, and Zeena Parkins.

Jim Haynes - Eraldus / Eravaldus (Elevator Bath, 2008)

We love picture discs. The may not sound the best, but they look so amazing. Especially with the right images embedded in that there vinyl. We all definitely have a little treasure trove of picture discs that we hang on to just because they're so goddamn beautiful. It's just a bonus when the music is good too. Especially when the music actually benefits from the limitations of the picture disc format.
The latest release from our very own Jim Haynes is the inaugural release in Elevator Bath's newly launched picture disc series and they couldn't have chosen better. For those of you who have never seen Haynes' artwork, he rusts things (as he always so reductively describes his process), but the truth is he coaxes impossible textures and patterns from chemicals and metals, often letting nature determine much of a pieces final look. And they are simple amazing, deep oranges and browns, streaks and smears, strange shapes where metal has rested on other metal, drips and layers where the chemicals have pooled or allowed to shift, inconsistencies in the metal revealed after having some of it's surface eaten away. The process is almost as amazing as the outcome, but needless to say, Jim's pieces are total industrial-wasteland-decay eye candy.
The two images chosen for this picture disc are no exception. And knowing that some of Haynes' music was also created utilizing the process of rusting, it's nice to think that the sounds within are in fact produced from chemical and metal interacting, the picture disc the literal visual analogue to the resultant sounds on the recording. But the sounds here are way too lush and varied to be produced so simply, so the images are left to spin, only somewhat removed from the sounds to which they are linked.
Eraldus / Eravaldus is probably Haynes' most varied and lush recording to date, whether on his own or with sound artist Loren Chasse in Coelacanth. The chirping of birds and the rustling of leaves, underpin what sounds like an airplane passing overhead, but the sound remains, too static to be an airplane, soon revealing itself to be manufactured, gradually melodies take shape, bits of glitch and little shards of electronic interference surface, tiny little sonic events pepper the slow shifting rumble. But those little sonic events eventually blossom into thick streaks of high end, which not soon after transform into strange scraping and whirrings. The rest of the record drifts from mysterious soundworld to mysterious soundworld, dark dronescapes rife with clicks and hiss and grit, like a recording of some swamp late at night, gritty landscapes of reverbed percussion, blurred into droney smudges, smeared static becomes long expanses of slow shifting sound, that slips effortlessly from corrosive to shimmery and back again. Quite nice!

Juanjo Palacios is a sound artist and field recordist from Asturias-Spain. His works have been published in the labels alg-a and miga, among others and included in different compilations. He has realized workshop of sound creation and field recordings; designed sound ambiences; and live performed at several festivals and art centres.

Live and previously unreleased recordings: 1979-1991, including classic works like Nodal Excitation, Propellers in Love, etc. Dreyblatt's music focuses on the harmonic possibilities of stringed music and heightened sound awareness and this is an important and supremely pleasurable sound document of his works. Includes music for various combinations of prepared double bass, miniature princess pianoforte, hurdy gurdy, pipe organ, French horn, trombone, violin, percussion, electric guitars, electronics, cimbalom, tuba, voice, etc.

Arnold Dreyblatt is a major contributor to American minimalism; yet his efforts to date, like those of fellow composers Rhys Chatham and Tony Conrad, have been conspicuously underdocumented. The tracks compiled on The Sound Of One String range from early solo performances to digital studio recordings of Dreyblatt's full ensemble; together these comprise the first comprehensive retrospective of a remarkable, twenty-year career.
Table of the Elements

The Sound of One String may be (Dreyblatt’s) best album. It’s a collection of recordings from the late 70’s to the early 90’s, some solo, some featuring his group, The Orchestra of Excited Strings. Dreyblatt’s music is primarily concerned with the manipulation of various string instruments to produce ghost-like overtones and harmonics. The wide variety of instrumentation here (everything from e-bowed guitars to hurdy-gurdys to a conventional string ensemble) brilliantly displays the range and musicality of Dreyblatt’s sound experiments.

After the summer break Audiotalaia is back with a new release. This time we are getting closer to the work of valencian sound artist Josué Coloma. Under his alias Alozeau, Coloma presents a five track EP entitled Returning Waves.

After having released at Coda Netlabel and Chennoir Netlabel, Alozeau presents a synthetic alb.um that explores small topics in each track. It seems that every composition on this album has a concrete topic and theme that is been repeated all along. Despite this consideration the album tells a story that is shifting at every stop. At certain point Alozeau dares to twist our auditory perception with a short track that changes the whole pace of the album, generating some sort of crossroad that will lead us to the final track, Returning Waves.

Finally this release is a very good example of carefully crafted dark ambient work. Coloma shows one more time the healthiness of his experimental project and shares it with all of us.

In terms of music the final release might be the most interesting one. 'Electrics and electronics', recorded in Montreal two years ago, this improvisation duet between Jean-Luc Guionnet and one Pascal Battus is also a pretty noise related affair in which a turntable is used and abused. The two keep the noise under control quite a bit, letting things hiss, scratch, beep and occasionally things go out of control, which is o.k. as it fits the scheme quite nicely... it makes it well up in terms of improvised noise.

All sounds are handcrafted and layered gradually during the production process, eventually serving as dense, detailed soundscapes as each finished piece is completed.

Deep Into Perspectives has served us this three track exploration of a more pure ambient sound, specifically trailored for Audio Gourmet. The basis of these were formed from past recordings Kent had in his 'vault' of sound, and then gradually built upon through several layers of newly recorded accent takes. Thus, 'The Lost Tapes' have been born, free for your enjoyment...

FOS - Rock (Near The Exit Music, 2010)

Listening to Rock, one pictures Katerina Koutouzi (aka Fos) holed up in some seaside cottage in Greece playing a rustic piano while swooning to the sounds of seagulls cawing outside. In actual fact, though Koutouzi is now based in London, she comes from Kalymnos, a small Greek island in the Aegean Sea, and spent her childhood years on the island and teenage years in Athens. The album's material is, of course, anything but rock music—perhaps the title alludes to the geographical aspect of the seaside locale that the music so often invokes. Regardless, it's a high-spirited affair that captivates through the force of its imagination and generous range of song styles, with the collection's nine tracks scattering wistful balladry, French chanson, and electro-pop instrumentals across its thirty-seven-minute running time. She sprinkles her largely homespun acoustic sound and traditional instruments (conch, piano, accordion, harmonium, glockenspiel, daouli, khaen, pebbles, chimes, cymbals, melodica) with sounds of the seaside, and unifying the material are the repeated appearance of an arpeggiated accordion theme and field recordings of seagull cries and crashing waves.

Koutouzi sounds positively possessed during “Sunset,” a rambunctious overture teeming with wistful piano and vocal melodies, drum beats, and stuttering voice effects. Waltz-time accordion playing in “Thalassa Platia” evokes Paris as much if not more than Greece; “Un Courant” likewise suggests a smoky French cafe in its pairing of accordion playing and half-whispered vocals. “Katharsi” features accordion again, but this time accompanied by crashing waves and seagulls' cries. Rock steps outside the acoustic framework for the skittering electronic burble of “With The Seagulls I,” a rather haunting instrumental setting that, frankly, doesn't need the seagull samples to make an impact. “Mnimi” is a breezy electro-pop lullaby whose gallop is mirrored by the presence of horses' hooves, and the chiming music box-like melodies of the pretty serenade “In Harmony” bring the recording to a satisfying end.
Rock is a commendable set (even if the seagull sounds are used to excess), and its non-stop flow of ideas holds one's attention. That the songs range across such a broad range of styles makes Koutouzi's Fos a challenging persona to pin down, but that's at least preferable to the music being too one-dimensional and lacking in variety.

Mark Peter Wright - Inanimate Life avalaible from 12th of september on 3Leaves

Inanimate Life is an ongoing audio catalogue, initially conceived whilst making a series of field recordings along the North East coast of England in 2006. For anybody who has walked, swam, sat or indeed attempted to record in these exposed conditions, they will be all too familiar with the experience of blustery coastal winds. During one such excursion I stood for some time watching and listening to seagulls drift on unseen and unheard thermals of air. I became fascinated by the intangibility of wind and its effect on physical objects. All around me seagulls were supported, pulled and caressed in suspended flight, sand was shaped and whipped into the air, coastal marram grass trembled and Victorian hand railings wailed.

This inaugural installment features some of natures most complex and vibrant audial worlds; including the creaking roots of wind blasted heather, the playful gusts that animate giant oak trees and the wailing drones that resonate along wired fencing.

Inanimate Life examines these delicate thresholds in our environmental, auditory perception and unveils a world teeming with sonic activity. The catalogue offers a moment to settle upon these events and in doing so, settle the ear upon the elusive, often fleeting phenomena of sound.

With the utmost honor Just not Normal presents the fantastic music of the Spanish Carlos Suarez. Exporing the poetry of Artaud, this masterpiece was originally intended as a physical CD release, but as Carlos said; he is more interested in exploring new sounds rather then setting out to find a label to be published. We could not have been more proud to have him sign on for this grand release. Darkness has set and settles in your ears!

2.- Vulgus veritatis pessimus interpres (Artaud).

En 1948 Artaud muere en el asilo de Ivry-sur-Seine después haber sido sometido durante años a tratamientos de electroshock e insulinoterapia. Paradójicamente es en estos años cuando escribe sus textos más lúcidos. En uno de sus poemas “Alineación y magia negra” explica como estas agresiones de la psiquiatría afectaron su existencia. Sin embargo, más allá de una crítica a los métodos terapéuticos de su tiempo, Artaud hace un hermético análisis de la sociedad burguesa, y expresa veladamente que esta agresiones eran en realidad un intento por: “vaciar al hombre de su yo, y de esta forma mostrarlo vacío, extraordinariamente vacío y disponible”. Explica que para la sociedad burguesa aquel que no este vacío y disponible a la voluntad del poder entonces en un enfermo mental que debe ser reducido o marginado.
A pesar de todo, Artaud supo escapar por momentos de los limbos del electroshock para explicarnos que su aparente locura: “ha dado siempre mejores indicios sobre la plétora de mi poder que las creencias pequeño burguesas de que: BASTA LA SALUD” Los representantes del sistema que diagnosticaron la supuesta locura de Artaud, basaron sus juicios en los atavismos de una sociedad que en realidad estaba muy lejos de la cordura.
Esta pieza es una dramatización sonora del texto “alienation e magie noire” leído por el propio Artaud en 1946. La composición intenta a través del discurso sonoro amplificar los significados del texto, su extática espiritualidad y la indoblegable lucidez de sus metáforas.
