Jack Hertz - Streaming Landscape (Earth Mantra, 2010)

1 Streaming Landscape

Earth Mantra enthusiastically announces a brand new album by an artist who has not previously released through our humble netlabel, this time a sleek live ambient performance by Jack Hertz called Streaming Landscape.

Any list of the coolest spots on the net for music fans would have to include electro-music.com, a community of artists and enthusiasts dedicated to the synthesizer and the vast world of sounds that such instruments yield. Among the many areas of interest on this site, electro-music regularly sponsors live festivals, both at physical venues as well as virtually over the net, where members and the general public congregate to enjoy each other's company, learn about new music technologies, and ultimately, to listen to great electronic music. One such virtual festival occurred in late September 2010, the Electro-Music Autumnal Equinox streaming concert, which presented literally dozens of performances by various artists over more than twenty-four hours. One particularly delicious set during this event was by Jack Hertz, the recording of which has now been released as Streaming Landscape.

Jack performed this music on five Native Instruments FM8 soft synthesizers and the Yamaha FS1R hardware synthesizer, with guitar loops contributed by Marc Moore, Kevin Haller and Jon Johnson. The performance is a continuation of Jack's "Freq Mod" (frequency modulation) project that comprises six FM synthesizers working together to create all the sounds, patterns and beats. In this environment, Jack leverages the great flexibility of FM synthesis to create a vast and unique palette of sounds that he can manipulate harmonically in real time. The Freq Mod sets are entirely live and improvised with all of the sounds and structures created in real time during the performance.

Musically, we feel this set is nothing less than a masterwork. Despite their digital source, the sounds bubble and dance warmly, the kind of electronic music that crosses over between the worlds of ambience and straight-up electronica, with enough elements of both to make fans of both worlds sit up and take notice. The clarity of the sounds simply blows us away. We have not had the pleasure of seeing Jack perform live in person, but we certainly will not pass up such an opportunity in the future if one presents itself. We have heard a lot of live ambient music, and this performance certainly stands tall amongst the best we have ever heard. Brilliant work.

So it is with great pleasure that we welcome Jack Hertz to the Earth Mantra family of artists and present his live ambient tour de force Streaming Landscape. A glorious live performance by an electronic artist in a serious zone, and one we think all of our listeners will enjoy immensely.

Jack Hertz - Black Sunday (Just Not Normal, 2011)

1 Black Sunday

As oft throughout the year electro-music.com feasts on special occassions with a team of performers galore. And so they did on Halloween, be it a day later though, sunday october 31st. One of the sets of that evening was from Jack Hertz.
And I’ve been listening to it now for the last hour. There is but one thing missing in all this; images.
Then again, all you need to do is put this on your player and for a full hour you’ll find yourself in a haunted story. One that happened on a black sunday! Jack features his quisp quake and tells a tale of horror.

Philippe Faujas – Deriva Sonora (Just Not Normal, 2011)

1 Deriva Sonora

Joining the ranks of avid Field Recordists is Philippe Faujas from Spain. Making Just not Normal not per say a field recordings netlabel, but since I personally am a big fan of field recordings and feel they go extremely well amidst experimental music Philippe is very much welcomed to the world of JNN. Follow his link to an even bigger world of recorded sounds, but let this release be your guide into the world of this fine French artist living in Spain. He won my heart with his great sounds and I know you’ll love it too.

Mikra – Es Ist Über Ein Wenig Rainer Maria Rilke (Just Not Normal, 2011)

1 Es Ist Über Ein Wenig Rainer Maria Rilke

It was some time ago that I received an email from Pavel from Minsk (Belarus). He came to JNN through word of Zhang JW of the great Bypass netlabel. As Pavel explains his music displays the modern technogenic world and intertwines also the Internet and cinema. This piece you’re about to hear is indeed a world of technogenics that intertwines the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke. JNN has previously released albums that work from the poetry of some famed poets and writers, but this release takes it all a step further.

One could call this collaging sounds and spoken words, but together they make for an intriguing listen.

Pavel may also be known under his ABC monniker that has a fantastic release out on the intox noize netlabel. As he stated he used to work with old Soviet analog synths in the past but has now moved on working more with computers. Either sound grand to my ears, so why not join in hearing something quite fascinating.

David Velez - Funza (Impulsive Habitat, 2010)

01 Funza 43:04

Part of my job involves taking photographs of industrial processes to illustrate a series of manuals with production instructions and guidelines that the company gives to the machine operators. Parallel to taking the photographs. I capture the sounds from those processes most of them involving steam and pneumatic powered machines whose sonorities I found quite interesting for their percussive nature and their high pitched textures respectively.

These recordings reveal an interesting obvious and irrelevant phenomena that captures my interest: parallel to making a product, the operator is performing a sound score using the machines as instruments.

The operator is unadvisedly reading and performing a score unadvisedly written and encoded in the instructions and guidelines.

While aware of "a performance" I advisedly record it.

(Some recordings were later treated. Found sounds collected during that period were also used).

Toshiya Tsunoda - Extract From Field Recording Archive #2: The Air Vibration Inside A Hollow (Häpna, 1999)

1 Bottle At Mountain Road 15:58
2 Bottle At Park 4:46
3 Tub-Type Container 5:56
4 Drain Hoses 13:26
5 Connecting Duct 14:35
6 Downpipe For Rainwater 6:33
7 Crack In The Lid Of A Manhole 2:35
8 Cavity In A Cliff Wall 9:24

The initiated already recognize the name: Tsunoda is a member of the WRK collective. A group of artists from Japan who are specialized in producing sound installations. To quote from the excellent Site Of Sound book: "WrK has attached importance to conceptual attitude that each member gives consideration to phenomena as shift/passage in time-space and to reception/perception of the phenomena". A strong conceptual approach, but never theless with a highly listenable result. Tsunoda placed microphones in hollow objects (bottles, drain hoses etc.), which act as an amplifier when placed outside, either in urban or rural environments. Whatever happens on the site is what you get. If they are placed under bridge, you hear the traffic moving over he bridge. It's that simple. The result are huge resonating tracks of vibrating ambiance. There is not the disturbing character one can find on some other WrK releases, but more "ambient" (= environmental). Beautiful release with adequate descriptions of each track.

Haunting and beautiful.
This album is the unique sound of the Theremin played and looped by Istanbul-based musician Cihan Gülbudak.
For those of you unfamiliar with the Theremin, it is an extraordinary instrument that can be heard on many a horror film and is played by moving your hands near the instrument but not touching it!
This is a fantastic album.
BFW Recordings

This music is not pursuant to "conserve"tories' mentality which describes the music as a composite of compatible sounds. Leaps of anarchist frequencies, a discipline which can not be rehabilitated by metronome's tick-tocks, a velvet and transcendental touch...

In this record, magnetic field has been confinement in electrical circuits and diversified far beyond the perception by Meczup.

Bryant Davis – Eyes Ears (PandaFuzz, 2010)

It feels damn good when something comes over email and then manifests itself into the physical realm. Pushing another person to dig deeper, look further, and work harder is…well it is hard. In the case of Bryant Davis this was easy and the output….inspiring. Bryant works in a variety of mediums and has some stellar projects posted on his website. Here Bryant takes a simplified route cutting out the computer age and going right to the black obelisk of the 80s childhood…the television. He modified the television to accept incoming audio signals, working in his classic slightly harsh but awakening style for the audio source. Mr. Davis lets it burn slow in good fashion here…..please enjoy the limited fidelity of these experiments….find your bearings inside the tube….they call on you to push yourself further too!
PandaFuzz

I work with both experimental video and audio. I have also been working on visualizing sound. For this project I modified a cathode ray tube television so that incoming audio signals are rendered to the screen by the electron beam as an image.

eight minutes of each recording, uncut

to be aligned (almost) seamlessly: seventytwo minutes altogether

score written & performed by Stefan Thut, 2009

"i'm very pleased to be releasing this work - a 72 minute composition of field recordings that both transport the listener & focus ones attention (as all good field recording based work should) on the art of listening & the endless vista of natural sound. The subtle task of composing with these sounds is best left simple, clear & focused & that objective is achieved here by Stefan"
