Endless Fertile Valley is very loosely based on the Dhammapada; all of the song titles are garnered from the ancient text of the book. The album title is the only exception and is intended to illustrate the true theme of the album that the Dhammapada can only hint at and words in general can barely brush against (music being the ideal medium for conveying our most esoteric and abstruse intimations.)
The theme came to me by accident (or mysterious design) during a 15 kilometer run during the summer. I passed a valley with tall grass that I stopped to admire. Suddenly, I saw the valley extend upward into the sky; it stretched behind me and became the road. I vomited in the prairie grass several times and lost consciousness. When I awoke, everything was back to "normal" and I ran home and wrote the entire album in under two hours. Here is that album, born from a bizarre vision of eternity and the impossibility of ending and certainly open to interpretation.

Otoño is an album of melancholic, intimist, minimalist music for piano. It has been recorded entirely of live improvisations, during 6 days of the fall of 2010, just as the music emerged from the forests of my mind to my fingers. It is an album of direct, sincere, quiet music to linger over. It is a double album of almost 100 minutes in length. Paper Relics are brothers Harry and Stuart Towell from a small town in Lincolnshire UK, called Bourne.
As well as running the Audio Gourmet netlabel Harry is a sound designer recording as Spheruleus.
Stuart is a self taught multi guitarist with several years' experience.
As Paper Relics, the brothers manage to combine their differing musical backgrounds as a hybrid of Stuart's blues, jazz, rock and folk influence and Harry's involvement within the modern ambient music scene.

Here we present their debut EP 'Recovered Artefacts', which should serve as a light introduction to their sound and nod towards the arrival of their first full album, which will be out later in the year.

Thematically, this EP is based around a photograph of the Malvern Hills that was taken by Stuart on a weekend away. After treating the image to make it look antiquated, the pair agreed on the title 'Recovered Artefact' as with the addition of vintaging effects, it looked very much like an old and long forgotten photograph.

After arranging the tracks into order, the duo began to think about what they felt the EP was trying to say as a package of music and treated photographic imagery. They got a vision of an elderly man discovering this old photograph of the tiny town he grew up in. Throughout the decades of his lifetime, the man had watched it change completely with constant industrial and commercial development turning the beautiful village it once was into a large and busy town.

'Recovered Artefact' tells the story of a man and his town as he reflects over the years of change and development that has turned this once picturesque village into something he no longer recognises...
Audio Gourmet

Paper Relics is an experimental music project recently formed by brothers Harry and Stuart Towell. While Stuart is a self taught multi-instrumentalist in his own right, readers will likely be more familiar with Harry's work, both for his own ambient/drone music under the moniker Spheruleus and as curator of the Audio Gourmet netlabel In Paper Relics, both brothers are given a chance to explore their mutual musical interests to their fullest extent.

The title of Recovered Artefact and indeed of the band itself, bring to mind images of reminiscence and of the passing of time and it is this mood which surrounds this debut EP, proving to be wistful and melancholic without becoming maudlin. The guitar work has an experimental flavour and in its makeup there are influences of blues, jazz and folk. When considering Stuart has found his way onto previous Spheruleus material and that Harry writes music in a broadly similar style himself, it is notable that Paper Relics has an identity of its own. The brothers narrate a story with the all-instrumental music and each track revolves around the artists unhurried guitar playing, often taking the form of Harry choosing to strum acoustic guitar chord shapes while his sibling plays electric lead, both in a loose laid back manner and usually joined by field recordings and found sounds.

There is something particularly satisfying when listening to music of high quality which still contains the occasional minor blemish such as a note not quite perfectly fingered or a scrape of the frets and this helps to give the EP an authentic and perhaps even a retrospective feel, harking back to a time before digital recording techniques could give an unnatural sheen to music. Recovered Artefact represents an honest account of the talent and the technique behind Paper Relics and is all the stronger for it.

The first EP we have ever released. We are typically very reluctant to release anything under an hour, but this intoxicating conceptual work of ambience by one of our favorite artists persuaded us to defy GoS conventions. On Gyokuro, Mirko Uhlig's 6 interconnected pieces comprise an admittedly short but no less realized composition that trigger thoughts of the tranquil, oxygenated tones of the more ambient works of Yui Onodera or even Celer; very minimal tones that are beautifully arranged to captivate the listener in a sea of field recordings and warm, lazy Sunday morning bliss. "Practice" presents a very catchy minimal motiff that begins to buzz and morph into a more abstract but no less enthralling evolution in the form of "Their Songs." "While They" shifts gears into a more haunting melody that recalls Milieu's "Beyond the Sea Lies the Stars" and then a full on symphonic wall of thick and warming cascades takes us deep, deep into finale, "The Gardens of Gyokuro." Mirko Uhlig once again shows his versatility as a sound artist who can craft very abstract, dark minimal compositions as in his recent Mystery Sea release, "The Nightmiller"- sprinkled far more sparsely here-to something unabashedly arcing and, indeed, ecstatic with "Gyokuro." Yes, this is audio ecstasy that conjures a most subtle and utterly sublime space that we find ourselves returning to often.

It has been remarked in the pages of Vital Weekly before, but the man to watch when it comes to producing some interesting drone music is Germany's Mirko Uhlig. Recently he did a 7" with [N], and already has a small catalogue of works (of which the great 'VIVMMI' will soon be re-issued on LP) and 'Gyokuro' is the latest in a series of these works. Again he works with relative minimal means to generate the pieces of music. An organ perhaps in 'In The Gardens Of Gyokuro'? That seems to be it. Maybe the processed bird call in 'Do Birds' (actually the title for these six pieces can be read as one sentence: 'Do Birds Practice Their Songs While They Sleep In The Gardens Of Gyokuro'). Uhlig knows how use a few sounds and still create a great piece of atmospheric music. And, you may ask, does it sound like anything else, or is it completely new? Well, no. In this particular line of music, nothing much new is done. That is perhaps also not the goal of this kind of music. Does it produce a great piece of music? Yes, it does. Whereas some of the current drone artists take too much time or use too much sounds, Uhlig knows how to play a few delicate sounds and set the tone right. Short pieces, each with their own character, yet as a whole, the album has a great distinct sound, an uniformed entity. Another fine work.

Ambient architect Christian Doil returns to Earth Mantra, this time with a double album of deeply expressive abstraction called Wasser. This starkly beautiful collection transports the listener to a universe of moisture, a detailed study of the effect of aqua upon the world, and not so coincidentally, upon our ears.

Christian has demonstrated repeatedly his exceptional talent for finding the music inside otherwise unremarkable everyday sounds. His previous Earth Mantra release Metall examined the sounds of metal, transforming them into abstract ambience of bewitching elegance. With Wasser, he performs a similar act of sonic alchemy, this time commuting the drips and drops of water into enigmatic and organic music that teases the senses and dances at the fringe of our periphery.

As Christian describes it: "I wanted to create a mental gate for traveling through water, one of the archetypes of elements. Water sounds work like a meditation; maybe our brain identifies the frequency of the water as part of us." Indeed, to the listener, this music feels quite natural and unobtrusive, a familiar and perhaps essential backdrop that soothes even as it fades into the background. Perfect music for meditation, or simply for providing a calming setting for daily life.

As usual, Christian's method of recording is almost as interesting as the music itself. In the case of Wasser, his process was to organize different objects in his bathroom, like glasses, flower pots, plastic bags, and of course the shower itself, as well as to make field recordings of raindrops on his windows. Utilizing this configuration, he produced and recorded a variety of sounds, afterward editing and modifying them into completed aural collages. The resulting music mystifies and entices, loosening the strictures of the mind and allowing the subconscious to emerge free. Old school ambience indeed, the kind of music that we love to listen to while sipping tea in front of the fire while watching the snow fall.

So with great pleasure we unveil Wasser, Christian Doil's latest abstract ambient masterpiece. Another striking album by a sound designer and ambient artist at the utter peak of his talents, and one that we hope leads to much much more from Christian in the future.

Over the past few years, Earth Mantra has had the honor of re-releasing two classic albums by Geoff Nostrant of Silvercord. Today, we are privileged to bring our listeners a brand spanking new Silvercord album, with all new pieces never before heard and never before made available anywhere. And what a breathtaking treat we have in store.

Fans of Earth Mantra will know that we hold the music of Silvercord in very high esteem indeed, having praised it as some of the best ambient space music we have ever heard at any level. Happily, we can report that Cronosleeps not only lives up to Geoff's extraordinarily high standards, but brings a fresh new dimension to his rapturous musical point of view that elevates the bar even further.

Geoff Nostrant has always focused his art on the most uplifting and divine sounds imaginable, the kind of compositions that can unwind the most tense of people and seemingly trigger spontaneous out of body experiences, the kind of music one would expect to hear in heaven itself. In Cronosleeps, one can find plenty of celestial music and heavenly sound design, but there is much, much more here to enjoy. Between all of the enchantment and bliss, Geoff has layered broad stretches of subtle reflection, even some sections of somberness and introspection, employing some of the most effective use of dynamics that we have ever heard in ambient music. The compositional strength of this album is simply staggering.

Indeed, where previously Geoff's music always had a strong sense of romance and ecstasy, of sheer joy bursting forth and enveloping the listener, with Cronosleeps he focuses much more on contemplation, a perhaps more mature presentation of not only the happiest of feelings, but all of the emotional richness that makes us human, even the darker and more intense states of being. As a result, his work speaks more deeply and with greater authority than ever before, grabbing the listener firmly by the shoulders and demanding full attention to the astonishing music being shared. Simply put, this is a masterpiece, by any measure one can imagine.

We never would have thought it possible for Geoff Nostrant to exceed his previous work so completely, and yet with Cronosleeps such a conclusion is inescapable. Silvercord is surely one of the greatest ambient artists making music today, and we at Earth Mantra are exceptionally proud to be able to bring his music to our listeners. Certainly one of the top albums of 2010, and in our view, nothing less than music for the ages.
