Philip Sulidae is a sound artist from Sydney, Australia who is steadily increasing his profile within the scene, thanks to his magnificent sound design.
His compositions typically comprise of densely layered dark drones, punctuated by an array of field recordings.
He has previously released music on Audiotalaia, Ripples Recordings, Dontcaresulidae and now with 'Hidden and Tied', he provides us with 15 minutes of free music here on Audio Gourmet.

'Hidden and Tied' opens with 'Autumn In Town', a mysterious and stormy multi-layered drone piece that is so typical of Sulidae's work. 'Rotten Wood and Clothes' somehow manages to yet further build the tension of this gradual and eerie record.
The EP closes with the slightly more tonal 'Forgetting What's Been Lost', an immersive and slowly unfurling closing piece that brings a shrill calm to this brooding 15 minute record.

This is a stunning example of the kind of quality we intend to keep bringing to you via Audio Gourmet. Philip Sulidae is an artist of the highest calibre and we expect great things from him through the future as he further hones his craft.

In response to your recent inquiry, I would like to put forth (for your leisurely and enlightened consideration) these few thoughts; flint, perhaps, the which to generate sparks after striking friction with your rigid, metallic imaginations, and (against all hope) resulting in ideas being ignited of a much higher sort. In order to make easier a process already rendered far too difficult (if I can be excused of utilising a crude metaphor, it could in some ways be likened to a corpse (not of a personal aquaintance, nor the locus of any kind of tragedy whatsoever, but obviously of some interest (of an unspecified nature) to us) that has been interred with it's head directed towards the centre of ourearthy globe.
It is of no mystery that attempts to discover the location of these sad (but, once again, not tragic) remains are going to be considerably more involved than had the cadaver in question been laid to rest in a more traditional manner. With nothing but the ever-shrinking soles of it's feet to steer by, we are constrained by greatly (not the least in terms of surface area) limited possibilities to work with; yet herein lies our liberation, meaning not less than this: The forcing of our perspective to acknowledge a greater scope of possibilities (or : a photograph held upside-downwards regarded as a distinct and coherent message unto itself, and not merely an inverted referent to an already-conceived and inflexible idea)), I will refrain entirely.

Award for the weirdest band names and title of the issue, Stilluppsteypa & irr.app.(ext.) create stunning grey metallic ambient very much in the style of Illusion of Safety or Schloss Tegal. Unlike their counterparts however, these two bands prefer a sort of surreal approach to their droning, sample ridden product. Recorded in Iceland, Japan and the US, tpith or tetapth builds it's uneasiness through the sheer unfamiliarity of the sounds heard. Whereas IOS and the Tegal utilise spooky samples and weird narration, Stilluppsteypa & irr.app.(ext.) develop their textures almost organically, when there are samples of, say a child crying, you're not sure if it's a straight forward sample or an eerie development in the music itself. Unreservedly recommended.

Spheruleus - Driftwood / Seafoam (Audio Gourmet, 2010)

For his second EP on his own Audio Gourmet netlabel, Harry Towell has put together this stormy and atmospheric two tracker under his Spheruleus guise.

'Driftwood/Seafoam' features the usual treatment of instrument recordings and accenting field noise:

'Driftwood' starts the EP off in a serene fashion, fusing sounds of a now broken zither, an old wind-chime instrument, hiss, drones and an oboe sample.
'Seafoam' explores stormier territory, with its array of guitar sounds warped and re-arranged into a wash of murky feedback.

As the Audio Gourmet netlabel catalog expands with the weeks and months that pass, I am delighted to push the label in a new direction with the inclusion of this stunning EP from Finnish guitarist Alvari Lume.

Alvari Lume is the artist name for guitar experiments from Jaakko Saavolainen, who mostly performs live either solo or with other musicians. He also is responsible for running a successful experimental music club called TMK.

'Ennen' is part one of two EP releases for Audio Gourmet and showcases a selection of three experimental guitar pieces I selected from the artist's Reverb Nation account. All of these tracks are past productions and span the last few years of Alvari Lume's recordings. 'Ennen' means 'then' in Finnish and is an apt title given that the recordings are all selected previous works from his catalog.
Fortcoming for the future will be the 'Nyt' EP, meaning 'now' in Finnish; this will feature a selection of pieces that Alvari Lume is working on specifically for the Audio Gourmet netlabel, to show where his music is at currently.

Within the three experimental tracks on 'Ennen', your ears are in for a treat. This is crafted entirely from the recorded sound of his live and improvised guitar and the fact that there is no additional electronic manipulation is a testament to his outstanding talent as a performer.

Crouton is ridiculously excited to announce this CD release from irr. app. (ext.). Dust Pincher Appliances was originally released in 1998 in a shorter, alternate form, via a now impossible to find 10” vinyl on Something Weird Records, Iceland. This CD edition on Crouton reveals different versions of the original recordings, as well as three tracks not present on the 10” edition. Some might say that anything graphic artist, sound artist, and writer Matt Waldron produces is peculiar, and his work as irr. app. (ext.) is no exception. Each minute of these startlingly Dadaist compositions reveals unexpected surprises. The instrumentation, who knows? A bit of everything really, except the standard ones. However, the style is not a mess, but rather an obsessively scrutinized audio story, aural painting, or sound experience, which is quite devastating to take in.

Waldron began this recording project in 1991, and has eight records under this name (although most were not publicly released). Some will recognize his name as the one co-responsible for the recent Nurse With Wound CD, “Chance Meeting of a Defective Tape Machine and Migrane” on the United Dairies label. He has also worked with the likes of Stillupsteypa and Coil, and has created scores for numerous Butoh performances in California. His graphic art, which is similarly as intriguing as his sound work, has also found its way into NWW territory, particularly on the cover of their CDs “Automating Volume 1 and 2.” Elsewhere, his visual work has been exhibited in various galleries throughout California, as well as in the pages of Bananafish Magazine. Furthermore, Waldron also was co-founder of the Oneiromantic Ambiguity Collective, a writing & performance group active since 1998. Each of Waldron’s talents in graphics, sound, and writing, can be witnessed in this fine release.

In 1690, John Locke said: "Time is to duration as place is to expansion, and whoever pursues his own thoughts, will find them sometimes launch out beyond the extent of body, into the infinity of space or expansion; the idea whereof is distinct and separate from body and all other things." irr.app.(ext.) says: "Herein, which is the structurelessness of insignificance, possibility is given a reign of manifestation no longer limited by the constraints of possibility, the which can be considered the body."

What is the way to achieve this structurelessness? This expansion of possibility transcending the body? Why, by subverting your structure into disjecta membra (scattered remains) by the application of Dust Pincher Appliances. The album is the answer to this derationalized notion. The album is a means of achieving voluntary bodily dissolution: the cremation of thought. A series of anti-logical Dada lessons in how to descend the staircase nude without distending your particulars, Dust Pincher Appliances coagulates the diaphanous sounds that emanate, narcotized, from the "antiantedelirationatal music box". Against and before the delirium that logically develops from birth. Cover artwork: Jim Woodring meets Mark Ryden meets Antonin Artaud. A morbidly humorous performance of psychic surgery, the prelude to the Dance of the Tutuguri. Case in point: track four, part b) "bones rattling around oblivion." A shake of the shaman's medicine stick, a juju-needle in your eye, the blood-ooze of the dog star message worming its way around your cerebral cortex. Primal and clinical. Passionate and detached. Track one is vacuumed particles - the Mad Wall-drones that, sucked from your carpet, inhabit your body. Plucked strings inherit your fears, swirling around in a cloud of eraser dust and pencil shavings. Muted and mutable, they are the particulated sounds of dread and debacle being sucked out of the atmosphere and into your vibrating center, so you can no longer hide from irrational devices that whirl and intoxicate.

We are dealing with Irrational Applications of Extreme science. The sound is a bag of sterilized filth, an opportunity for the average human being to display his affection for detritus of the lowest order; a chance communion with all of the scattered effluvia, excretia and aspirated vomit sloughed off in a lifetime of sin. Will you turn away again in disgust, reaching for the toilet plunger, enforcing your corporeal irrelevance? Or will you instead face your foul legacy, and learn to be its equal? Track five: "desist in ceasing to exist," a double negative polarized to repolarize the polar icecaps that strain, crack and break at the influx of echoing underground chambers full of HAARP mindscrapes and digital flushes of modulated brain crimes. A distinctly emotive piece full of hurt and headache. Finally, the culling comes in the form of "wracking the carcass for residue," an industrial throb of obsolescence that entrances as it perplexes. Industrial = IN DUST, a TRIAL = i.e., a baptism achieved through grime. The readymade music boxes of track seven have all the telltale heart of a tale told in part only, and as I slide into this cold wormhole occupied by the hyperstring-membrane, the secret exit tunnel out of a vast abandoned atomsmasher, I know that I must return. I think I lost my contact in there, and out here, I've lost all contact.

i arrived here, by the lodge... it was down there, in the Common, that the recording began • Overall, it's clearer on this map of the reserve.

From the Common, i crossed the bridge (seen in the first Geograph link above), followed the river west towards Lower Wetmoor Wood until i reached the other bridge (shown on the map), then north beside Stanley Wood to Plumbers Trench, along the trench (where assorted rabbits were playing as the sun finally began to rise above the horizon) & then finished with a leisurely ramble in East Stanley Wood •

The equipment used was a Sony PCM-D50 digital audio recorder (44.1kHz/16-bit) with a windshield & miniature tripod, listening through Sennheiser HD 25-1 II headphones •
