Rick Reed - Dark Skies At Noon (Elevator Bath, 2005)

1 Dark Skies At Noon 30:06
2 Ceremony - Parts 1 & 2 17:57
3 Ghosts Of Energy 17:49

Reed’s droning, crackling, lulling, screeching patchworks become as aurally-demanding as a Hecker or a Pita, while projecting also an out-of-the-box bigness and a vaguely psychedelic warmth, or a frayed (as opposed to diced or pixilated) edge that is, to my ears, very unique . The music here is not straight drone, or as uni-directional as that word might imply; it does not creep long, plunge deep, or run up towards abandon. Pure tones, static loops, and granulated washes collect and regress to form a looming mass of nearly symphonic austere sound bites, conjuring the spirit of writhing, head-cleaning “noise” music but projecting a cleaner vision, a high-lonesome, spectral conglomerate of disembodied machines.

The sound is spacious and arch-ful, though never fully quiet, as if there is continual off-site energy blowing through so that all lost is replaced, reflected, or refracted through a brilliant sensitivity to texture and pitch. Field recordings, violin, and the familiar guitar of Keith Rowe avoid becoming focus and instead evolve within the mix, rounding out the organism of Reed’s compositions, the hyper-real connectedness of such shrill and singularly uninviting tones and waves. Dark Skies At Noon is hands-down the best release of any Reed involvement that I’ve heard, and, in a limited pressing of 328, it is something to be treasured.

Fabio Orsi - Stand Up Before Me, Oh My Soul! (Preservation, 2010) avalaible for pre-order!!!

The Preservation label presents Stand Up Before Me, Oh My Soul! from Italy’s Fabio Orsi.

Fabio’s prolific output has had him heralded as a master of modern ambience, creating rich, freeform atmospheres with organic instrumentation and processed sounds. Though known for momentous pieces of hypnotic power, this work marks a dynamic new turn in Fabio’s sound. The force of his composition takes more of an overt stance on Stand Up Before Me, Oh My Soul!. The raw and primal pulse at the heart of his music is writ large here with a punk mindset, unleashing a heady mass of guitars against a backdrop of cavernous, shimmering distortion and crashing drums. (courtesy of Rich Baker, who also performs regularly with Nadja’s Aidan Baker) It also boasts a bristling sense of lysergic, hazy melody.

Brutal and glimmering, dark and beautiful, Stand Up Before Me, Oh My Soul! drops loud and large in pursuit of pure dissonant bliss.

Stand Up Before Me, Oh My Soul! is the first in a new limited edition CD series from Preservation called Circa. 300 copies only will be available of each release in the series and each will feature a design by Mark Gowing. Each design will be realised using a specially created abstract alphabet of shapes, determined by artist, title and catalogue number for something both fixed and random.

Saluki Regicide returns to Webbed Hand with a long-awaited sequel to “Mirage Emigrants” [wh012] — an album full of atmospheric sound textures and evocative samples.

More work from a recording project described as “haunted head music to disturb your inner child.” Saluki Regicide was the first major project of C.P. McDill and he still considers it his primary one. It was originally most active 2003-04, then sporadically thereafter, usually in the form of collaborations and long-form works. This album signals a return to the original style of working as Saluki Regicide, and even hints at future directions.

The concept behind the music of Black Aurora was to invoke a dark and empty atmosphere that at certain times would let light shine in, only to engulf it after it had shone too long. Between heavy, droning guitars, dark ambient pads, and the occasional use of church bells and orchestral strings, the music of Black Aurora is not only music, but an experience in creating a one of a kind atmosphere that brings the listener in, and wont let them out until the final droning note fades away.

Stephen Vitiello - The Smallest Of Wings (self release, 2005)

The Smallest of Wings, 2005, Vitiello's newest "environmental experience" and the centerpiece of his recent exhibition at the Project, does something similar but shifts the focus from the built to the natural world. In purely visual terms, all that distinguishes it from an empty room are six small white speakers, mounted at ceiling height, and a bench in the middle of the floor. What really inhabit and energize the space are six channels of sound assembled from the low thrum of beating moth wings (recorded in upstate New York Upstate) and the higher-pitched buzzing of hummingbirds (tracked down a little farther from home, in the Brazilian Amazon). In this new work, Vitiello again transports us from the physical and psychological here and now while making sly reference to the inherent imperfections of his technical means (the insect and bird sounds often seeming to imitate the crackle of static).

Vitiello's work is strongest when least visual: The Smallest of Wings functions precisely by encouraging us to conjure up or make visible, as a spirit, by magic arts; hence, to invent; as, to conjure up a story; to conjure up alarms imagery of our own rather than handing it to us on a platter. Whenever he introduces objects--even, as is usually the case, objects explicitly associated with the reproduction of sound--the results feel limited by comparison. So it is with Noisy World, 2005, in which a pain of speakers have been built into the pages of an old book about the problem of noise pollution, turning it into the kind of self-consciously self-defeating one-liner that might be charming from a younger artist but feels too cute for one of Vitiello's experience. Having the speakers broadcast a song by the Christian indie-rock band Danielson Famile also seems an odd way to add heft. Speaker Shooting (cannon) and the related Speaker Shooting (cannon pieces) (both 2002-2005) suffer from the same problem: Despite a list of venerable ancestors including Nam June Paik Nam June Paik, Gustav Metzger, the Who, and Einsturzende Neubauten, destroying an item of sound equipment and documenting the results, as Vitiello does here in the form of four large photographs and, uh, charred bits of speaker, now seems a less-than-vital activity.

Crazy Wall Thing, 2005, a "wall drawing" produced in collaboration with Tony Oursler, also makes use of partially disassembled speakers but avoids the dead ends of the previous examples. Here, the massed circular forms of twenty-eight small, uncased speakers--each painted with a crude smiley face--create an abstract connect-the-dots design. Those that are linked to a floor-bound CD player and amplifier emit unidentifiable squawks and twitters that flit unpredictably from spot to spot. While meditative, immersive works like World Trade Center Recordings and The Smallest of Wings succeed by exploiting the format's capacity to effortlessly collapse grand scale or negate far-flung diversity, rougher, more abstract projects like Crazy Wall Thing generate an altogether different, manic energy.

Giesela - Weiß (Gruenrekorder, 2005)

1 Holzbock
2 Baracken
3 Überfahrt
4 Adlerstraße
5 Hans-Werner
6 Azuma

The fidelity and ease of compact discs (and, subsequently, of digital audio, as embodied, or at least epitomized, by MP3s) has taken John Cage’s famous realizations about the nature of silence and turned them outward. Now that the absurdity of the concept of pure silence is commonly appreciated, we use field recordings to explore the sounds that are actually there, however remote they may be. Giesela’s Weiß doesn’t even try to make good on its enticing subtitle ("Field recordings and melodicas"), but it more than makes up for that image of a Caribbean sound art by taking raw audio and transforming it into casual soundscapes without ever fully losing the sense of the original material. The opening track, "Holzbock", is at first so near-silent you’d think we might have to wait for a subsequent recordist to wander along and make something of it, but then the creaks of an old house start up and you might find yourself pining for the calmness that had come before. "Überfahrt" uses scraps of cello to develop a lilting backdrop amid percussive punctuations. Tellingly, several of Giesela’s sources involve children. "Baracken", quietly, employs a child’s voice, before vaporizing into a suite of white noise figments, and two others, "Adlerstraße" and "Azuma", contain "textures" from a "T. Siefert Children-Soundensemble." The last of these is a delightful mix of wooden wind chimes and tertiary space tones that’s like the encapsulation of the perfect weekend morning. Together they promote a sense of wonder that’s captivating and, occasionally, more than a little scary.
e/i magazine

Luckily things fall on good ground with the last release, by Giesela, whom we met before, in Vital Weekly 523, as Giesela Rot, aka Marc Riek, the man behind the label. His release is subtitled ‘Field Recordings And Melodicas’, by which he doesn’t mean literally melodicas, but more ‘the other sounds also used and given to me by my friends’, which means sounds of a cello and children, which pop up in various tracks. Riek himself is responsible for the field recordings used here. In the six pieces these sounds are put together in a kind of microsounding way. Silent, careful, inaudible but also warm and digital. Its a release to keep your full attention with, other you’d miss out on something. Throughout the music is quite intense, even when it’s not always finding new paths to walk along. It certainly stands out from the previous two.
